Araminta Cowper is the mother of Cressida Cowper.

History[]

1813 Season[]

At the start of the 1813 social season, Lady Cowper prepared to show off her daughter, Cressida. After Lady Whistledown's papers reported on the events, Lady Cowper met with the other mothers to talk to them about what the papers had said. Lady Cowper stated that the papers just stated the truth. They then discussed the Featheringtons' incoming cousin. Lady Cowper thought four ladies out at once would be too much, but Lady Featherington didn't believe the cousin would provide much competition. When Marina Thompson was introduced and entered, all the women were taken back by her beauty.

At events, Lady Cowper spoke highly of her daughter, showing her off to potential suitors.[1]

Lady Cowper was later part of the effort to spread the news of Nigel Berbrooke's illegitimate son in attempt to get him run out of town.[2]

When Prince Friedrich of Prussia came to town, Lady Cowper was delighted when Cressida drew his attention. She told Daphne she was glad that Daphne was tied to the duke or Cressida never would have gotten the prince's attention. She later bragged about her daughter becoming a princess that same evening, only for Daphne to appear unescorted and turn the prince’s head from Cressida.[3]

She continued to attend events, chaperoning her daughter as she continued her pursuit of a groom.[4]

When Daphne and Simon's engagement was announced, Lady Whistledown said it was either true love or concealing a scandal. Knowing what had transpired between Daphne and Simon in the garden outside Lady Trowbridge's party, smirked at that statement.[5]

After the Featheringtons were shunned by society, Lady Cowper scoffed at their audacity when they showed up at an event they'd previously been invited to attend.[6]

After Lord Featherington won a large sum of money and began to repay his debts, the Featherington ladies began to attend events again. Lady Cowper was surprised to see them as one such event.[7]

1814 Season[]

Lady Cowper attended Lady Danbury's ball with her daughter, Cressida. At the ball, she and Portia Featherington talked about the newly returned Mary Sharma. They were surprised she'd show her face with what she did. When Cressida asked, Lady Cowper explained that Mary was the incomparable of her season, but fell in love with and married a clerk and moved to India with him.[8]

Shortly after the start of the 1814 season, Cressida attracted the new Lord Featherington as a suitor, much to her and Lady Cowper's delight. Lady Cowper proudly showed off the ruby necklace that he had gifted Cressida at Lady Danbury's soirée for Edwina Sharma, boastfully hinting to Lady Featherington that it meant he intended to marry her.[9] Lord and Lady Cowper and Cressida were then invited to a formal dinner at the Featherington estate by Jack. Lady Cowper was thrilled when it became clear that he intended to make Cressida his wife.[10] Sadly for the Cowpers, Portia soon manipulated matters to force Jack to propose to Prudence Featherington instead.[11]

During the abrupt delay at Edwina and Anthony's wedding, Lady Cowper gossiped with other women and spread a rumor that Edwina was sick due to not eating since her engagement in order to fit into her wedding dress.[12]

After the aborted wedding, Lady Cowper was among those who shunned the Bridgertons and Sharmas. She expressed surprise at seeing Violet and Lady Danbury together at the art gallery. They told her about a ball they were throwing together and offered to see if there was still room to invite her, as they were expecting a full house.[13]

Lady and Lord Cowper attended the Featherington Ball. At the ball, when Lady Cowper saw Anthony and Kate dancing together, she said it was a scandal and wondered if that was why the wedding was called off. The queen was standing nearby and said that the wedding was canceled because she had simply changed her mind.[14]

1815 Social Season[]

At a social event at the start of the 1815 season, Lady Cowper was talking to Portia Featherington about Jack Featherington leaving in the night without taking anything with him, Lady Cowper said she hoped the next Lord Featherington would have more scruples. Portia said that Jack had left the title and estate to whichever of her daughters first produced a male heir.[15]

When word spread around a ball that Colin Bridgerton was helping Penelope Featherington find a husband, Lady Cowper was among those gossiping.[16]

At a party, Lady Cowper told Cressida that Lord Debling had declared his intent to marry that season and directed Cressida to him. Cressida wasn't impressed, but Lady Cowper told her if she didn't find a husband soon, Lord Cowper would be forced to find one for her.

At the Innovations Ball, she impressed upon Cressida that she needed to secure a dance with Lord Debling, as Lord Cowper had cut their allowance in half, putting pressure on them both to find Cressida a husband.[17]

During the calling hour, Lady Cowper and Cressida waited to welcome any callers. They were pleased when one was announced, but dismayed when Eloise walked in. She said she was there to call on Cressida, so Lady Cowper left them alone. A few minutes later, she returned with her husband, who said that Cressida must not be seen with Eloise anymore.[18]

Desperate to get Cressida married, Lady Cowper and Cressida met with Lord Greer to arrange a marriage. Despite him saying that she could only wear somber clothes and would have no exposure to music or art, Lady Cowper said it sounded delightful and pressured Cressida to say the same.[19]

As news traveled that Cressida had claimed to be Lady Whistledown, Lord Cowper threatened to send Cressida to live with her Aunt Joanna in Wales, as Lord Greer had rescinded his proposal. Lady Cowper then begged Cressida to take back what she'd said, as she knew Cressida wasn't clever enough to be the real Lady Whistledown. Lady Cowper accompanied Cressida when she was summoned to the queen's court. The queen didn't believe Cressida was the real Lady Whistledown either and said she wouldn't give the reward until Cressida published a convincing issue. Lady Cowper tried to forbid Cressida from attempting to publish, but Cressida saw it as her only option as she had no marriage prospects and refused to live with Aunt Joanna.

When Lord Cowper pulled Cressida's dowry, Lady Cowper decided to help Cressida write the issue, hoping the reward money would be enough of a dowry to lure a husband from the continent or the countryside.

Once the announcement of Lady Whistledown's return was ready, Lady Cowper and Cressida went to the Mondrich party without being invited and waited for the queen to summon them. Once she did, they distributed the announcement, intriguing the queen, who said they'd talk about her reward after the promised issue was delivered.[20]

Lady Cowper helped Cressida write the next issue, heavily disparaging the Bridgerton family, and they watched as people reacted to it. At the same time, the real Lady Whistledown published her own issue, discrediting Cressida. They appeared before the queen, who looked at the two issues side by side and then put Cressida's down.

When they returned home, Lord Cowper shut Cressida in a room, telling her to stay there until her aunt arrived to take her. Lady Cowper said that Joanna had sent a letter and would be there in a week or two. Cressida begged her mother to help her, but she said that Lord Cowper had threatened to send her away as well if she did, which would leave no hope of Cressida being able to return. Cressida was upset that their issue had focused so heavily on the Bridgertons, as Eloise was the only person ever to show her true friendship. Lady Cowper reminded her that she'd been raised to believe it was everyone for themselves, especially women, and encouraged her to remember that.[21]

When Colin came to speak to Cressida, Lady Cowper was reluctant to let them speak privately, but agreed to give them five minutes. Later, Joanna arrived and Lady Cowper was reminded how cruel Joanna was. Cressida begged her mother not to make her go, but Lady Cowper said she had no choice and sent Cressida on her way.[22]
