Cressida Twombley (née Cowper) is the widow of Horace Twombley.

History[]

1813[]

Cressida made her debut, alongside Penelope Featherington. Penelope accidentally bumped into Cressida while she was speaking with the Duke of Ashbourne, causing Cressida to spill punch on herself and the Duke. Cressida believed the Duke was going to propose, and withdrew because of Penelope. She developed a hatred towards Penelope, going out of her way to insult her whenever she could.[2] She purposely tripped and spilt punch on the one dress Penelope wore that year that was in a color that she had chosen. Though Cressida often mocked Penelope, the Bridgerton family would often come to Penelope's defense, with the three older brothers, Anthony, Benedict and Colin asking Penelope to dance, or Violet or Eloise Bridgerton consoling Penelope afterwards.[1] They also didn't hide their disdain for Cressida or her family.

1814[]

Cressida attended the Bridgerton country party at Aubrey Hall. During a conversation with Kate and Edwina Sheffield, Cressida made rude remarks about Penelope and her dress, getting Basil Grimston to join her in insulting Penelope. Anthony came over and escorted Penelope to dinner, giving Cressida the cut direct.[2]

1824[]

Cressida was now a widow after the death of her husband Horace Twombley, who, according to Lady Danbury, was a lecher who fooled everyone into believing that he had money.[3] After Lady Danbury offered £1,000 for whoever could unmask Lady Whistledown, Cressida announced during the Macclesfield ball that she was Lady Whistledown.[3] Cressida quickly made her way through the crowd to claim her prize from Lady Danbury, but Lady Danbury was skeptical and demanded proof, which Cressida agreed to provide within a fortnight.[4] However, Penelope published a new issue of Lady Whistledown, branding Cressida as a scheming imposter. In the issue, Lady Whistledown stated that it would break her heart if Cressida received credit for her work — an echo of Penelope's own words at the Macclesfield ball.[5] Realizing that Penelope was Lady Whistledown, Cressida confronted her, demanding £10,000 within one week or she would expose Penelope's secret to the ton and ruin her.[6] Despite the threat, Cressida's plan backfired, as Colin publicly announced that Penelope was Lady Whistledown during Daphne and Simon's ball.[7]
