Doctor Monro sits and waits. Finally, he gets up.
Princess Augusta comes in and thanks Doctor Monro for coming so quickly. She tells him she returned to Buckinham House to find that Queen Charlotte was no longer living there. She has moved to Kew to be with the king. Doctor Monro told her that the king needed intensive private treatments. She wants an explanation and to know his next course of treatment. He says he can't. He's not the king's doctor anymore. He's been dismissed. She says that's not possible because the king wouldn't do that. Doctor Monro says it's not the king. She's shocked that Queen Charlotte did that.
The season changes from winter to spring.
Violet is excited to join Lady Danbury on a walk. Violet enjoys winter, but she's been longing for a nice day. It's the first nice day and it's perfect for a stroll. Violet says she's contemplating starting anew. Lady Danbury is happy for her. Violet tried thinking about having another man. Edmund was all she'd ever known. They were children together. She had a great love and doesn't expect another. Her standards are high. Lady Danbury says she has a right to high standards. She should enjoy every moment of her journey. While Lady Danbury goes to get her pelisse, Violet looks around. She notices some knick knacks on the mantle and asks if they're from Lady Danbury's travels or her children. She looks closer and spots the birthday hat behind a clock. She pulls it out, but then puts it back and moves away. Lady Danbury comes back and they leave for their walk.
Queen Charlotte poses with her children while they are painted by Benjamin West. Queen Charlotte tells Brimsley that the crown is breaking her neck, though it's regal. The children start to complain that they're uncomfortable. Queen Charlotte calls them out for their bickering and says without an heir, the portrait will be useless. Prince George says she's being unfair. She asks if they've produced an heir among them. They've all failed in their duties. She asks Benjamin West to paint faster. He asks if the king will be joining them soon. Queen Charlotte gets up and leaves, followed by her children. Brimsley tells him to continue. When he objects that the family has left, Brimsley says he can see them and threatens his reputation if he doesn't continue.
Queen Charlotte finds King George eating. She says he looks better and more himself. She asks if he feels better. He says she shouldn't have come. She apologizes for not coming sooner. She promises to stay by his side. He says she shouldn't have come and he doesn't want her there. He tells her to go back to Buckingham House. When she doesn't obey, he says he never wants to see her and tries to get her to leave. She says she can't force him to stay, even when he orders. She says she'll stay. He begs her to leave, but she says won't go. He told her to leave, but he didn't say he doesn't love her. She's been alone and felt like a failure as his wife and the queen. She's finally realized he stayed away because he loves her. She asks if he loves her. He says he's trying to protect her. He tries to back out of the conversation. She asks him again if he loves her. She asks if it's because he doesn't believe she could love him. She assures him she does. She loves him enough to do as he wants. All he has to do is say he doesn't love her and she'll go back to Buckingham House and they'll live their separate lives. She'll have the baby alone and fill her days alone. He just has to tell her he doesn't love her and she is alone in the world. King George says he's a madman, a danger. There are different worlds in his mind. He doesn't know where he is. She asks if he loves her. He says no one wishes for a life with that. Queen Charlotte says she'll stand with him between the heavens and the Earth. He finally says he loves her. He has from the moment he saw her trying to go over the wall. He can't breathe when she's not near. He kisses her and starts crying. He wanted to tell her about his illness. It's been his secret his entire life. She brings a light to his life. She says it's her and him. They can do it together. He kisses her again.
King George and Queen Charlotte lie in bed together. King George asks when the baby will come and Queen Charlotte tells him it'll be very soon. He rests his head on her belly and says hello to the little king.
Coral gets Lady Danbury ready for another walk, more solitude. Coral advises her that her cloak makes a nice blanket if she decides to have solitude on the ground. She asks if he was kind and Lady Danbury says he was joyful. She felt joy. Coral is glad for her.
Lady Danbury waits for Lord Ledger. When he arrives, Violet is with him. She's getting out of her mother's hair. Lady Danbury and Lord Ledger talk about how busy they both are with their duties. Lord Ledger hopes Violet will grow up into a woman with an unimpeachable reputation like hers. Lady Danbury wishes them happiness and thanks Lord Ledger for his kindness after her husband died. He thanks her in turn for the same. They say goodbye to each other and Lady Danbury leaves.
Princess Augusta assures Lord Bute and Earl Harcourt that all is well. King George dismissed his doctor, but he has a new one. She just can't remember the new doctor's name. Lord Bute asks if she's actually seen the king and talked to him. She says she's his mother, but they don't talk to their mothers. She repeats that all is well. The baby is well. Lord Bute says he'll let parliament know that King George is available for an address.
Brimsley tells Queen Charlotte that Prince George and Princess Elizabeth are there to see her. Queen Charlotte welcomes them in. They're there on behalf of all the children. Princess Elizabeth says the baby race is cruel. She's focused on nothing else. Prince George is grieving because his daughter is dead, but she hasn't shown him a moment of real kindness. She shows none of them regard or compassion. They've worked so hard to provide her with an heir. Princess Elizabeth has lost many babies before they were ready to be born. Queen Charlotte didn't know she'd lost babies. Princess Elizabeth says they all have. They're trying. Queen Charlotte knows it's a difficult task, but she asks so much of them because she knows they can rise to the occasion. Prince George says she doesn't know them. She's never gotten to know them. She says she wants what's best for them, as their mother. Prince George says she's never been a mother. Queen Charlotte says she's done her best for them. If only they knew how hard she worked for them. She's been an excellent mother. Prince George says she's been their queen, but she's never been their mother.
Queen Charlotte is crafting when King George comes in. He's on his way out to the fields to work on his farm. He asks if she wants to join. She says she'll stay and grow their future king. She tells him he has a letter. Reynolds gets it for him. It's from Princess Augusta. King George tears it up, then kisses Queen Charlotte before leaving. Reynolds clears away the ripped paper, then warns Queen Charlotte that King George has good days and bad days. She says he did, but now that she's there, his days are good. He is better. Reynolds says he is now. Queen Charlotte says all he needed was a routine and to get rid of that dreadful doctor. He is well. Reynolds leaves.
Reynolds and Brimsley bathe together. They wonder if King George will stay well. Reynolds is hopeful. If he does, they'll have a lifetime together and Reynolds and Brimsley will continue serving them. It's possible. Reynolds says perhaps they will. Great love can make miracles. They kiss.
Lady Danbury comes to see Princess Augusta. Lady Danbury is glad that Princess Augusta met the new Lord Danbury. Princess Augusta asks if she did. She knows she met Lady Danbury's son. Princess Augusta has been told that Queen Charlotte visited Lady Danbury. Lady Danbury says she offered her condolences after the death of Lord Danbury. Princess Augusta adds her condolences. Princess Augusta thinks Queen Charlotte must think highly of Lady Danbury to have come out during her confinement. Lady Danbury says as it's a fact that her son will inherit his father's title and estate. Princess Augusta questions if that's a fact and Lady Danbury asks if it isn't. Princess Augusta says only King George can decide if The Great Experiment goes beyond this generation. It's a complicated debate. Princess Augusta could expedite the answer if Lady Danbury has information that could be useful. Lady Danbury can't imagine what knowledge she might hold that might be helpful. Princess Augusta says the issue of title and inheritance will be difficult to settle.
Coral thinks Lady Danbury should give Princess Augusta something small. Lady Danbury says she won't engage with Princess Augusta because she promised Queen Charlotte friendship. Coral says she could ask Queen Charlotte to intervene. Lady Danbury says Queen Charlotte has gone away to Kew. She can't just turn up there. The queen is expecting. Lady Danbury can't make her worry. Coral heard rumors that the king is injured or ill in some way. Lady Danbury says that's just gossip. Coral's not one for gossip, but that's what she's heard. Lady Danbury states again that she can't trouble Queen Charlotte.
Princess Augusta arrives at Kew and waits. Brimsley comes in and talks to Reynolds. Princess Augusta sees this and tells them to tell King George that she's waiting.
Queen Charlotte tells Princess Augusta that King George isn't receiving visitors at this time. She says she's not a visitor. Queen Charlotte tells her to return later. He's not available. Princess Augusta says she suspects the king is being kept against his will. Queen Charlotte says the king doesn't wish to receive visitors at this time. Princess Augusta is appalled that Queen Charlotte is speaking for the king. She's certainly become comfortable. Princess Augusta says Queen Charlotte is carrying one king in her womb. Princess Augusta carried the other. Queen Charlotte's king can hide, but Princess Augusta's cannot. From the moment a king is born, there is no hiding. There's no room for weakness or illness. She's done everything she can to secure King George's power and Queen Charlotte is ruining it. She's allowing him not to try. She can't let him hide. He has a country to rule. The government is starting to get suspicious. King George must face parliament. It's on her now.
Queen Charlotte goes to see King George and tells him his mother was there. He says he doesn't want to see her. Queen Charlotte says she sent him away, but they have to go back to Buckingham House. He has to address parliament. The people need their king.
Queen Charlotte rants about her children, calling them whining and ungrateful. They couldn't have asked for a better life. She was a great mother. She tries to get Brimsley to affirm that statement, but he doesn't. She sends everyone else away. He says she's a great queen, but she serves one person: the king. Everyone serves the king. They care for him above all. Queen Charlotte says that's not true because Brimsley cares for her. He says he'll continue to do so until his final days. Queen Charlotte asks Brimsley if he has any family or if he ever married. He says no. He could never find someone who was free to spend a lifetime with him. He's there with her. Everyone there cares for the king. Queen Charlotte has him go get her dressers.
King George and Queen Charlotte return to Buckingham House.
Lady Danbury is pleased to see Queen Charlotte progressing so well. Queen Charlotte says life at Kew hasn't been without discomfort. She asks about the king and how he feels about having an heir. Queen Charlotte is glad to be home. She's missed Lady Danbury's company. Lady Danbury has nothing of consequence to share. She's been busy tending to the estate since her husband's passing. Queen Charlotte asks how Lady Danbury's children are and if there's anything she can do. Lady Danbury says just this. Spending time with a friend is all she needs. Queen Charlotte says she asked the royal physician and he told her it would be quick and painless to get a baby out of her. She asks Lady Danbury if it hurts. Lady Danbury says it's the worst pain imaginable. When Queen Charlotte asks if she's serious, Lady Danbury says it only hurts a little and she'll hardly remember it when it's over. Queen Charlotte is relieved.
Lady Danbury and Violet walk. They're in perhaps Lady Danbury's favorite place in London. Violet asks Lady Danbury about her statement that her garden didn't bloom until after her husband died. Lady Danbury asks if she wants to marry again. Violet says she hasn't thought that far. It would be a change and she likes her life as it is now. She asks if there was ever anyone else after Lord Danbury, if she wanted to marry again or take a lover. Lady Danbury says she wanted to feel alive. She's lived a life. She has loved and been loved. And that's all she'll say. She is discreet. Violet wants to know more. They're friends. Lady Danbury asks if she ever told Violet about the queen's brother. Violet is surprised, which Lady Danbury says is because she's discreet.
Lady Danbury and Duke Adolphus greet each other. Adolphus says he's going to be in London longer than he expected with the birth and wonders if he might call on her. She says she would like that very much.
Lady Danbury tells Coral she's solved her problem. Adolphus wants to court her. She'll allow it and marry him. He's a nice man and runs his own land. His title is his own. Coral wonders about Lord Ledger, but Lady Danbury brushes it off.
Queen Charlotte finds King George and watches him. She says she likes watching him. He's writing his speech to parliament. He needs it to be brilliant. She reads it and says it's brilliant. She offers him a distraction. He says he doesn't need a distraction. He just needs a brilliant speech. It's important. The distractions are best left for another time. Queen Charlotte holds her belly and says the baby is coming. He calls for Reynolds.
King George asks where the doctor is and why he hasn't arrived yet. Reynolds says he arrived moments ago and he's with Queen Charlotte. Reynolds follows as King George runs to them. He greets the Archbishop and Lord Bute. He tries to enter, but Lord Bute and the archbishop stop him. He is to wait outside. They can hear Queen Charlotte moaning. Lady Danbury comes out and says she's asking for King George. Over their objections, King George enters the room.
King George holds Queen Charlotte's hand. She asks him to stay. The royal doctor tells him the baby is coming feet first. King George asks Lady Danbury her thoughts, as someone who's given birth before. Lady Danbury says she's losing blood, but the royal doctor says it's normal. King George tells Queen Charlotte she's strong and she'll be fine. He tells her his favorite horse as a boy was breech. He's also seen it in sheep and calves. There are ways to help. He insists that the royal doctor prepare them. He helps move Queen Charlotte to the edge of the bed.
King George holds his newborn son. Adolphus sas the baby is magnificent and asks how Queen Charlotte is doing. King George says she's resting. Princess Augusta asks if he's healthy, if there are any signs. King George says he's their next king, so he's perfection. Augusta agrees.
Adolphus and Lady Danbury talk about the baby. Lady Danbury says Queen Charlotte must be full of joy. Adolphus hasn't seen much of her. He continues talking about that, but Lady Danbury is distracted watching Lord Ledger play with Violet. They make eye contact. Adolphus realizes she's distracted, which she attributes to too much sun. He has her sit down while he gets the carriage. Lady Danbury places at Lord Ledger, who looks back before returning to Violet.
Princess Augusta is surprised to see Lady Danbury again so soon. She thinks Lady Danbury must have news. Lady Danbury doesn't, but asks if there's news from Buckingham House about the title. Princess Augusta says that's a decision only King George can make. And she knows that Lady Danbury was present for the birth. Lady Danbury isn't in a position to talk to them about such matters. Princess Augusta says she could help, but Lady Danbury won't tell her anything. Princess Augusta is upset that Lady Danbury isn't saying anything. Lady Danbury starts to cry and Princess Augusta tells her to stop. She sends everyone out of the room, then pulls out a flask. She offers Lady Danbury some pear brandy and tells her to stop crying. She doesn't want to know about Lady Danbury's problems and she doesn't care about them. When her husband died, she had to throw herself on the mercy of his father, the king, a cruel and evil man. She and her husband both loathed them. He was vicious with King George. They both had bruises, but there were no other options, so she endured. She secured her son as king. She found a way to control her own fate. She doesn't like Lady Danbury, but she's been an admirable adversary. Their battles bring Princess Augusta satisfaction, so she's not allowed to come in and sob. She had to cover her bruises and endure. She can't lose control of her fate. She pours more brandy for each of them and asks how life is going at Buckingham House. Lady Danbury says that news depends on what will become of her son's title.
King George prepares to speak to parliament. He asks where Queen Charlotte is. She comes in then and says she was with the baby. They have plenty of time. His hand shakes as he holds his speech. He's questioning part of it, but she tells him he's ready. He goes off to give his speech. She tells Brimsley he's going to be brilliant.
King George's hands shake as he rides to parliament. He gets out of his seat and lies down on the floor of the carriage. When they arrive, Reynolds is unable to open the carriage as King George cowers. Reynolds tries to rouse him.
Reynolds tells Queen Charlotte that King George never got out of his carriage. Queen Charlotte asks what he did because King George was fine when he left. Reynolds says he wasn't fine. That was merely hope.
Queen Charlotte goes in to see King George. She says Reynolds told her what happened and she's there. King George is hiding under the bed. He says he's sorry. She asks if he can come out. He says he wants to, but he can't. The heavens can't find him under the bed. Queen Charlotte tells him all is well, but he doesn't believe it. She crawls under the bed with him. He says he couldn't get out of the carriage and read his speech. She says he'll do better next time, but he says there's not better. There's no cure. This is who he is. Sometimes he'll be there and sometimes he won't. He would understand and let her go if she wants to leave. She says she won't go, despite only having half a husband, according to him. He can't give her a full marriage. She says if what they have is half, they will make it the best half. She loves him and that's enough. As long as she's his queen, she'll never leave his side. He's the king. He'll be king and his children will rule. Together, they are whole. He says it's dusty under the bed. He's sorry he didn't tell her the truth when they met. She says he did because he said he's just George and that's all he needs to be. He doesn't know how to fix what happened in parliament. Queen Charlotte suggests bringing parliament to the Crown instead of the other way around. It might be time to open the doors to Buckingham House.
Coral shoos everyone else away as Lady Danbury is being courted.
Adolphus and Lady Danbury sit in silence. Finally, Adolphus comments on it, so Lady Danbury asks him about his week. He tells her what he's been doing. He says his business is finished and his nephew is born, so he's going home. She says she'll see him on his next visit, but he asks her to come with him as his wife. He knows it's quick, but there's something between them. He feels it and believes they can be happy together. He leans in and kisses her. He tells her to think about it and he'll wait for her answer.
A maid comes to Violet, who asks her to have Humboldt open the attic. There's a crate from her father's house she needs. And she's inviting Lady Danbury for tea on Friday.
Lord Bute asks Princess Augusta if she was aware of the king's condition. She says she was. They're throwing a ball to introduce the new prince. They realize Princess Augusta had no knowledge of this because she didn't mention it to them. She's lost control. She's the mother of the king, but she's not the queen. Earl Harcourt says King George couldn't address parliament and spends most of his days farming. Lord Bute asks after his medical state. Princess Augusta says he's fine and the crown is safe. Lord Bute says King George will be on display at the ball. If he can't perform his duties… Princess Augusta says he will. If he doesn't, they'll talk about removing him.
Invitations to the ball are delivered.

Coral talks to Lady Danbury about the benefits of her marrying Adolphus. She wouldn't have to worry about her future or title. Lady Danbury finally tells her to stop talking. She sends Coral out, saying she'll be down in a moment.
King George looks at the portrait of himself and Queen Charlotte. She joins him and says it's a nice portrait. He says he didn't even sit for it, but it's still them. He's in awe of her beauty. He shakes as he reaches out to her, so she takes his hand in hers. It's the two of them together. She asks if he's ready and he says he is.
The ball is underway. Vivian Ledger chastises Violet, who is looking around for the queen. Vivian tells Lord Ledger that Violet will embarrass them, but he says Violet is perfect. Vivian doesn't thinks she's ready to be out, but Lord Ledger disagrees. Violet spots Lady Danbury and waves. Reynolds then announces King George and Queen Charlotte. He and Brimsley wait as they come down the stairs to greet the public. Queen Charlotte tells King George not to be nervous. They share a moment together and she tells him to smile and wave. They enter together. They move to the dance floor and begin dancing together. She tells him to keep his eyes on her and tells him it's just them. The crowd watches as they dance. At the end of the dance, they kiss. King George thanks them for coming to celebrate the birth of their baby and announces that he'll be George IV. They toast to their future king.
King George and Queen Charlotte continue dancing together. Lord Ledger dances with Violet.
Adolphus finds Lady Danbury, who is hiding away from the crowd. He also dislikes crowds. He's happy for his sister, who is a shining success. He'd like to be happy for himself as well. She asks him what their life would look like if they married and she went back with him. He says it's the greatest place with the best people. He would rule, but she'd have duties as well. They're more egalitarian there. She'll have to learn the language. And it's good that she's young. It means she can have more children. He'll raise the Danbury children as his own, but he must have an heir, perhaps two or three. She can travel with him. They can even come back to England every few years. Lady Danbury tells him no. She can't marry him. He thinks he's made her nervous, but she says she can't marry him because she can't marry anyone. He's a wonderful man. He could have rescued her, but it doesn't change that she can't marry anyone. She never wants to be married again. She spent her life breathing someone else's air. She doesn't know any other way. She needs to learn to breathe on her own. He tells her not to do this. He says she's making a mistake. She tells him she might be making a terrible mistake, but it's hers to make. She hopes he'll forgive her. She walks away.
Princess Augusta tells Queen Charlotte it's a lovely ball. Queen Charlotte says they love hosting and will do it more often. Princess Augusta says she's only ever wanted King George to be happy. Queen Charlotte says he is happy. Princess Augusta says Queen Charlotte makes him happy and thanks her before leaving. King George comes up behind Queen Charlotte and suggests they dance.
Far away from the ball, Brimsley and Reynolds dance together, laughing and smiling.
Brimsley dances alone. A footman spots him and startles him. Brimsley chastises him for stepping away from his duties, but he says the queen has visitors.
Queen Charlotte looks at her family portrait. Prince Edward and Princess Victoria come to her and tell her they've produced an heir. She asks if they're sure. Princess Victoria says she waited a while so there would be no doubt. Queen Charlotte hugs Prince Edward and tells them they did well. Princess Victoria thinks it'll be a girl. Queen Charlotte says a girl is wonderful. A strong queen is what the country needs. She thanks them.
Lady Danbury leaves the ball. Queen Charlotte comes to her as she gets to her carriage and calls her out for refusing Adolphus's proposal at her ball. He's a good man with a pure heart. Someone in her position could find much worse. Lady Danbury apologizes. Queen Charlotte says Adolphus will survive. She's more worried about what to do about Lady Danbury. She is upset that Lady Danbury didn't come to her with her fears about her inheritance and title. Lady Danbury didn't want to place her burdens on top of the queen's own. Queen Charlotte says they're one crown. Her weight is the king's and the king's is hers. They rule for the welfare of all their subjects, new and old. The castle walls are high to protect them. She suggests Lady Danbury come to them directly with her concerns. Doing otherwise suggests they aren't capable of addressing them. Unless that's what she believes. She addresses her as Lady Danbury. Queen Charlotte dismisses her and says she'll send for her soon.
King George tries to order Reynolds to drink, but he must refuse. He sends Reynolds away. Brimsley follows. King George tries to get Queen Charlotte to drink as well, but she also refuses, because she suspects she's expecting again. She holds his hand to her belly. It's him and her. And them. He kisses her.
Lady Danbury comes to see Violet. The weather isn't good for a stroll. Violet leads Lady Danbury to sit. She has some of her birthday hats out on the table. Her father made them for her and she made them for Edmund and the children. She didn't always keep them on display, but lately, she's been feeling sentimental. She picks up specifically one of the ones her father made and hands it to Lady Danbury. She thought she'd enjoy them before letting them go. She's going to pack them away. It's a large collection, full of memories she doesn't want to let go of. Lady Danbury looks at Violet. They stare at each other for a while. Lady Danbury says she should leave the hats where they are. They're lovely and cheerful. Violet agrees and they sit down to have tea.
Queen Charlotte arrives at Kew. Queen Charlotte tells Brimsley not to hover as she's capable of seeing him on her own.
Queen Charlotte enters King George's room. He tells her not to bother him. She says it's his Charlotte. She has wonderful news. He ignores her. She goes over and climbs under the bed, where she beckons Farmer George. She wants him to hide from the heavens with her. He climbs under next to her. He says hello to her, calling her by name. He says it's quiet there. She tells him she's succeeded. Their son, Edward, has married and his wife is with child. His line will live on. He says it's their line. They hold hands. He thanks her and she remembers him as he was when he was young. She thanks him and they share a kiss. He tells her she did not go over the wall and she says she didn't.
