Edwina Bagwell (née Sheffield) is the younger sister of Kate Bridgerton.
History[]
Early Life[]
Edwina is the daughter of a baron's second son and his second wife, Mary. She grew up close to her older half-sister, Kate.
When Edwina's father died, the family finances were in a delicate situation. They didn't have enough money for Kate and Edwina to debut in separate seasons, so they planned for both sisters to make their debuts in the same year.
1814[]
Edwina makes her debut into London, and is named the Season's Incomparable. Edwina lets people around her know that she will only marry with Kate's approval.
Edwina is courted by Anthony Bridgerton, though Kate doesn't approve of him. While Edwina is out on a carriage ride with Nigel Berbrooke, she gets knocked into the Serpentine by Kate's dog, Newton, who had run away from Kate and Anthony while on a promenade. Edwina becomes sick, causing her to miss the Bridgerton musicale. She recovers in time to head to Aubrey Hall with her family for the Bridgerton country party. Edwina takes part in a game of Pall Mall with Kate, Anthony, his siblings Colin and Daphne, and Simon Basset. When Kate knocks Anthony's pink ball into the lake, Edwina insists it be retrieved. When she tries to retrieve it herself, Anthony and Colin stop her and wade into the lake to retrieve it.
Edwina is there when Anthony rescues Penelope Featherington from being bullied by Cressida Cowper, and is equally impressed as Kate by Anthony's actions. After Anthony and Kate become engaged, Edwina privately tells Kate that she's thrilled and not the least bit surprised, because she knew Anthony was smitten with Kate. She serves as maid of honor when Kate weds Anthony.
A month later, Edwina had afternoon tea with Kate, and tells her that she's in love with Mr. Bagwell, a scholar she met at Aubrey Hall. Kate is thrilled, and tells Edwina she would like to meet him. Anthony also comes home, and Kate tells him about Mr. Bagwell. Anthony also expressed interest in meeting him, and Edwina says she's glad to have him for a brother. When Anthony and Kate visited Mary the next day, she mentions that Edwina was out on a promenade with Mr. Bagwell.
Kate chaperoned Edwina and Mr. Bagwell on a carriage ride some days later. Unfortunately, Newton got loose and Mr. Bagwell lost control of the carriage. Edwina managed to get away unscathed, but is horrified when she realizes Kate is still trapped in the crash. Anthony comes and gets Kate out while Edwina unties the horses to help. When Anthony pulls Kate out, Edwina sees her sister has a broken leg.
Later Life[]
Edwina married Mr. Bagwell. She joined Anthony, Kate, Daphne, Colin, and Simon every year after at Aubrey Hall for a rematch of the Pall Mall game. She also joined the Bridgerton family when they celebrated Anthony's 39th birthday, and offered to accompany Kate and Anthony by playing pianoforte to Kate's flute and Anthony's trumpet, but they turned her down.
Personality[]
Edwina is the Incomparable for her beauty and grace. She is also sharp and perceptive, and prefers to spend her days reading books rather than being at balls. She wishes to marry a scholar who shares her interests but knowing her family's financial struggles, Edwina is faced with pressure to marry a nobleman or wealthy gentleman who can provide for them.
Relationships[]
Romantic[]
Mr. Bagwell[]
Edwina met Mr. Bagwell, a scholar, and became smitten with him. He was a second son and didn't have much income, but Edwina still fell in love with him. Luckily, Kate married Anthony, which allowed both her and Mary to be taken care of, and Edwina married Mr. Bagwell with the blessing of her family.
Familial[]
Kate Bridgerton[]
Edwina adores her older sister, Kate, and the two are close. Edwina convinced Kate to make her debut with her when Kate was reluctant, saying she didn't want to be parted from her sister. Edwina decided that Kate must approve her suitor before she would marry since she knew Kate was very critical. Edwina teased Kate often over how riled up Kate was when talking about Anthony Bridgerton. After Kate and Anthony's engagement, Edwina told Kate that she suspected that Anthony was smitten with Kate, and was not surprised the two got engaged. She became convinced that Anthony was in love with her sister, which delighted her. With Kate's marriage, Edwina felt relief to know that her mother and sister were taken care of financially. Kate expressed her approval of Mr. Bagwell, and Edwina was happy to marry with her sister's blessing.
Mary Sheffield[]
Edwina loves her mother, and gets some of her sharp wit and astuteness from Mary. Knowing how little money the family has, Edwina tries to find a wealthy gentleman to marry so her mother will not struggle later in life to live comfortably. Fortunately, Kate marries Anthony, and Edwina is relieved to know that her mother will be taken care of financially.
Friendships[]
Eloise Crane[]
Edwina became friends with Eloise Bridgerton during the country party at Aubrey Hall. They are the same age, and Edwina loves to tease Eloise, but she also enjoyed spending time with her, especially after Kate and Anthony's betrothal.
