Edmund Bridgerton was the 8th Viscount Bridgerton and patriarch of the Bridgerton family. He is the late husband of Violet, and the father to their eight children. He died of an allergic reaction to a bee sting, and was succeeded by his eldest son Anthony.

History[]

Edmund was out hunting with Anthony. As they were returning to Aubrey Hall, Edmund was picking hyacinths for his wife. He was stung by a bee, and had an allergic reaction that led to his death just moments later. His death had a profound impact on Anthony, who had to take over the viscountcy at a young age.[1] He never met his youngest child, Hyacinth, who was born after he died and his youngest son Gregory stated that he didn’t have any memories of him. Edmund is fondly remembered by his family as a loving husband and father.

Personality[]

Edmund is a loving and devoted husband, whose true love match with Violet Bridgerton gave them eight perfect children. He's also an endlessly patient and kind father, who takes special pride in guiding his eldest son Anthony through life. Anthony also inherited his father’s pocket watch, which he often carries.

Anthony describes Edmund as a courageous man who was not afraid to fight, not just for his family, but for everything else too. He would also be serious, like Anthony, but loved pranks, like his youngest son Gregory.[2]

Relationships[]

Romantic[]

He was married to Violet Bridgerton and deeply loved her. Their marriage was a true love match and he died in her arms. His death deeply saddened Violet, who at one point confessed to Anthony that she wished that she had died in childbirth with Hyacinth so that she could be with Edmund. Violet also told Daphne, at the ball she and Simon were hosting, that she hadn't danced since Edmund died. Later, she told Anthony that although losing Edmund was the worst time of her life she would choose the life she led with him each and every time.

Familial[]

He had eight children with his wife, four sons and four daughters; Anthony, Benedict, Colin, Daphne, Eloise, Francesca, Gregory and Hyacinth. He loved and cared for them, although he died before Hyacinth was born.

He is the father-in-law of Simon Basset, and Kate Bridgerton. Though he never met, Kate did come across his grave after a game of Pall Mall.

Through his eldest daughter, he has a grandson, Augie Basset.

Notes and Trivia[]

  • Netflix Bio: Edmund was a loving and devoted husband, whose true love match with Violet Bridgerton gave them eight perfect children. He was also an endlessly patient and kind father who took special pride in guiding his eldest son Anthony through life.
    • The beloved late father of the Bridgerton brood (at least in the Regency era). Violet and Edmund fell in love during childhood. He died before the birth of his youngest child, Hyacinth Bridgerton.[3]
  • It has yet to be stated whether the 'Aunt Winnie' whom Francesca stayed with during the first season was Violet or Edmund's sister. However, as Violet appears to be an only child in Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story, it is most likely that Winnie is either Edmund's sister or an honorary aunt with no blood relation to either of them. Although it is also possible that she is Winifred Page, the widow of Edmund’s younger brother Hugo Bridgerton who passed away a year before Edmund in the books.
  • According to Anthony, Edmund loved a good prank. He once put glue in Benedict's shoes.[2]
  • Edmund liked to celebrate his birthday and Violet used to make him birthday hats, like her father had made for her, which he wore for the whole day. Violet would also make the hats for their children.[4]
  • Lilacs were his favorite flower.[1]
  • The flowers Edmund is seen picking for Violet before her death are hyacinths, the name given to his youngest child, Hyacinth Bridgerton, who he never met.
  • Although not stated in the show, it appears that Edmund suffered from some form of bee allergy.
  • Edmund owned a pocket watch, seen on him prior to his death, that Anthony later inherited and can be seen carrying in several episodes during season one and two.
  • The betrothal ring that Edmund gave to Violet was used by Anthony when proposing to Edwina Sharma though it fit her sister Kate Sharma perfectly. Anthony used the ring again during his first proposal to Kate.
