Sir George Crane is the deceased lover of Marina Thompson, and the biological father of her two children, Oliver and Amanda.
History[]
Sir George Crane attended the same church as Marina Thompson, who suffered from hunger during the long sermon hours. Seeing her hunger, George would sneak her snacks during the sermon. This went on for several years, and romance bloomed between the two of them, to the point where they had sex together before marriage.[1]
In 1813, George went off to Spain to fight in the Napoleonic War, and Marina's father sent her to London, collecting a debt owed to him by persistent gambler Archibald Featherington, to partake in the social season and find a husband of well-standing.[2] Unbeknownst to either of them at the time, Marina was pregnant with George's child.
When Marina discovered her pregnancy, she wrote to George,[3] who was thrilled. He began a reply, promising to return home so he could marry her and help her raise their child together. Unfortunately, before he could uphold his promise or even send the letter, he was killed in battle.
Soon after, George's younger brother, Philip, received a letter for George, from Daphne Basset, that requested him and informed him of Marina's pregnancy. With his brother dead, Philip traveled to the Featherington household to meet with Marina and inform her of George's death, as well as gift her the unfinished letter by George that promised to return to her, proof that George had not forsaken her or their child, as she had previously believed. An honor-bound Philip then proposed to Marina, which she initially rejected. However, when she realized that her attempted abortion had indeed failed and she was still pregnant, she decided to accept Philip's proposal and left London to marry him.[4]
