Sir Henry Granville is an famous artist in London society.
History[]
Relationship with Benedict[]
Henry was attending an event when Lady Danbury drew his attention to Benedict Bridgerton, who had made a critical remark about one of Henry's paintings.[1]
At another party, Henry approached Benedict again and asked if a painting he was looking at was more to his liking. Benedict tried to apologize for his comment, but Henry brushed it off. He asked Benedict where his paintings were, so Benedict tried to explain that he didn't have any. Henry offered to let Benedict visit his studio and see his private collection.
Benedict arrived at Henry's studio and was shocked to see topless women posing as several artists drew them. Henry showed Benedict some of his own work, which Benedict liked, then let Benedict sit down and starting drawing himself. Long after everyone else had left, Benedict remained. Henry told him he had great potential. He also said Benedict was welcome back anytime and that there was no judgement or expectation at Henry's studio.[2]
During his next visit to Henry's, Benedict found him in a room having sex with another man, which shocked him. Henry then attended a party and introduced Benedict to his wife, Lucy, with whom Benedict had had sex at the party.[3]
Henry noticed that Benedict hadn't come to one of his parties in a while and invited him to come back. Benedict quickly excused himself from the conversation. At a later event, Benedict pulled Henry aside to talk and asked him about his situation. Henry simply stated that he was in love with another man, Lord Wetherby. His marriage afforded his wife her freedom and security and was happier than most marriages. He then talked to Benedict about how much they risked for their love. They had to be aware of every interaction, worried someone would discover them. It takes courage to live outside society's expectations. Benedict himself spoke of doing that, but Henry thought perhaps it was just talk with him.[4]
Simon and Daphne's Portrait[]
Henry's services were engaged to paint the official portrait of Daphne and Simon. He struggled because their pose was unnatural and they weren't smiling. He stopped painting and changed their pose. When they made eye contact, he commented that they were the picture of devotion.[5]
Relationships[]
Romantic[]
Lord Wetherby[]
Sir Henry is secretly in a relationship with Lord Wetherby. The two meet clandestinely during Sir Henry's raucous parties and interact socially when they can.
Lucy Granville[]
Henry is married to Lucy Granville. The marriage is mutually advantageous, with Sir Henry being able to maintain his relationship with Lord Wetherby and Lucy enjoying the privileges of being a married woman. Given his own proclivities, Sir Henry is tolerant of Lucy's own extra-marital affairs. The pair are such good friends and appear together in public often enough that only those who are particularly close to them are aware of the truth.
Friendships[]
Benedict Bridgerton[]
Sir Henry met Benedict at a gallery opening after the second Bridgerton son unknowingly insulted his artwork. Sir Henry was more amused than angered, and when he ran into Benedict at their mutual social club, invited him to an artists' gathering he hosted. Eventually, Sir Henry allowed Benedict to attend one of his more raucous parties, where he accidentally walked in on Sir Henry and Lord Wetherby before engaging in a threesome with Lucy and Madame Delacroix. Their relationship became somewhat strained after that, with Benedict being visibly uncomfortable at the idea of Sir Henry's true orientation and Lucy's libertine ways.
