John Monro is a doctor who treated King George III.
History[]
Work With the King[]
Princess Augusta assembled a group of doctors to treat King George's symptoms. They debated possible treatments until Monro said it was time to consider that his condition wasn't physical, but nervous. He suggested that the king was suffering from disorganization of the nerves, a condition he specialized in treating. The other doctors declared him a quack, but Princess Augusta decided to let him try, as other more conventional treatments had failed. He said he planned to cure the king just by talking to him.[1]
Coronation Day[]
On Coronation Day, Monro came to the palace to examine King George.[2] He assured King George that he was fit to be married and sent him to find his bride when they were informed that she had disappeared.[1]
Advanced Treatment[]
King George expressed fear of Charlotte finding out that he was sick and asked if there was something Monro could do to cure the fits forever. He said he'd been experimenting with something more proactive and King George said he'd try anything. Monro asked for some rooms in the palace and full access to the king at all times. He explained that King George had grown too used to the obedience of others. He began forcing the king to obey him, submitting to his orders. This included Monro shaving the king, submerging him in ice water, and feeding him peasant meals. Until he learned to submit, Monro said, he wasn't fit to govern, so Monro would govern him. When the king began to protest how long they'd been at it, Monro said it would continue until they'd achieved their goal. When Monro began to worry that a fit might be imminent, he tightened the reigns. After getting a message from the queen, King George decided that he would not submit to that day's treatment and decided to work on his farm instead.
The king decided to move his things to Buckingham House to be with the queen. He said that he'd find a place for Monro there, but their consultations would be much less frequency. Monro warned him that there could be consequences for that decision but King George said he felt healthier than he had in years.
The king finally came to Monro and told him he wouldn't be treating him anymore. Monro said he would still be the queen's doctor as she was with child.
When King George learned that Charlotte knew something was wrong with him, he went back to Monro and submitted to treatment.[1]
Monro continued the treatments. He continuously asserted authority over the king's actions, even stopping King George from receiving a letter from Queen Charlotte. When Queen Charlotte discovered what Monro was doing, she told him she didn't care if the king was mad. She just wanted him to be happy. She ordered Monro removed from the grounds.[3]
Meeting with Princess Augusta[]
Monro was called to meet with Princess Augusta. She knew that Queen Charlotte had moved to Kew to be with the king and asked Monro about his next course of treatment. Monro informed her that he wasn't the king's doctor anymore, at the behest of the queen.[4]
