John Stirling is the husband of Francesca Stirling.

History[]

John was at the Innovations Ball when he stepped out to find some quiet. There, he ran into Francesca Bridgerton, who was also looking for a bit of quiet. They agreed to enjoy the silence together. After a few moments, they looked at each other and smiled, then Francesca excused herself and left.[1]

Soon after, John called on Francesca in her home. There, they sat in silence together until Lord Samadani came in to see Francesca and John excused himself.

John was out on the town when Francesca approached him. He told her he attended only enough society events to avoid seeming impolite. She asked him if that's why he stopped to speak to her, only to have him remind her that she started the conversation. After a moment of awkward silence, John noticed a violinist playing nearby and asked if Francesca enjoyed the music. She admitted that she didn't and suggested ways they could improve the arrangement. John quickly excused himself and left.

Later, at an event, John came to see Francesca. Hurt from his previous abrupt departure, Francesca tried to brush him off, but he said he wasn't a man of many words, but he did believe in the power of a gesture. He gave her a roll of paper and left. He'd had the music they heard re-arranged exactly as she suggested.[2]

John attended Colin and Penelope's betrothal party, where Francesca talked to him about Anthony and Kate being home. She commented that they made a good match. John asked if she was opposed to marriage for herself and she said she wasn't. Franceca introduced him to Anthony and implored him to tell him the story he'd told her about his muddy boots. He tried to tell the story, but struggled to get the words out and ultimately gave up.

Later, after composing himself, John went back and was able to tell the story of finding mysterious mud spots in his house and frantically trying to track them down only to find out that his own boots were the cause. The story was mean to illustrate that he sometimes missed what was right in front of him, but he said he didn't do that with Francesca.[3]

When John and Francesca got engaged, Francesca encouraged him to announce it to her family. He said he wasn't sure they'd hear him and demonstrated his point by announcing that he had the plague and they were all doomed. Realizing he was right, Francesca called her family's attention to herself and announced the engagement. Everyone happily celebrated.

Violet started planning things immediately and said she wanted to have the wedding breakfast at Bridgerton House, unless John's mother wanted to host. He said she'd only fight not to host something. Since John hadn't been the queen's first pick for Francesca, they asked if Violet would talk to the queen on their behalf, to support the match so she wouldn't reject it. Violet suggested waiting until the end of the season and marrying quietly, but Francesca said they didn't want to wait that long to establish their home and family.

John then went to get drinks at Will's club, which Will was selling, with Colin and Benedict. They toasted to the marriage and drank all the alcohol left, as Will couldn't bear to see it go to the new owner.

At the Mondrich party, Francesca asked Violet to talk to the queen, who was in attendance, but Violet said she wanted to wait a while longer. Francesca realized that Violet didn't really support the match and confronted her about it. John excused himself from the conversation, leaving the two of them alone.[4]

The night before Colin and Penelope's wedding, John went out with Colin, Benedict, and Will to toast to the wedding. He drank more than he normally would, which he attributed to Violet not liking him. Colin and Benedict said that it wasn't that she didn't like him, but loved a good romance. They suggested he make a grand gesture to show Violet that he was passionate about Francesca.

The next day, John attended the wedding with Francesca and her family and ad the wedding breakfast, surprised Francesca by asking her to dance. He told her that they both needed to be a little bolder in declaring themselves.[5]

John and Francesca surprised Violet by telling her that they were applying for a special license to have a small wedding at home. After the wedding, they planned to move back to John's family's home in Scotland to start their lives together, as Francesca look forward to the quiet she never found at Bridgerton House.

John and Francesca were married with only her family, Marcus and Lady Danbury, and Will and Alice in attendance. After the wedding, John toasted to Francesca and her family, noting that all the qualities he loved most about Francesca came from her mother.

At the Dankworth-Finch ball, Eloise asked if she could go to Scotland with them, as she wanted to see some of the world. John said that was wonderful news and introduced his cousin, Michaela, who would be traveling with them.

The Bridgerton family saw them all off as they began their journey.[6]
