Lord Cowper is the father of Cressida Cowper.

History[]

1814 Social Season[]

Lord and Lady Cowper and Cressida were invited to a formal dinner at the Featherington estate when Jack began to express interest in marrying Cressida. Lady Cowper was thrilled when it became clear that he intended to make Cressida his wife.[1]

Later, at a ball, Jack was found in a compromising position with Prudence Featherington, manufactured by Portia Featherington. When they were discovered, Lord Cowper asked Jack if he would do the honorable thing and marry Prudence if she wished it. Prudence said she did wish it.[2]

1815 Social Season[]

At the start of the 1815 social season, Lord Cowper attended events with his wife and daughter.[3]

When Eloise called on Cressida, Lord Cowper went to Cressida and said she couldn't be seen with Eloise anymore. He also threatened to marry Cressida off to one of his aged friends.[4]

When Cressida claimed to be Lady Whistledown, Lord Cowper said he would be sending her to live with her Aunt Joanna in Wales because Lord Greer had rescinded his proposal. Then when he was ousted from his club because of her, he said he was pulling her dowry.[5] After Cressida published as Lady Whistledown, Lord Cowper had her sequestered to a room, saying she had to stay there until her aunt arrived and threatening to send Lady Cowper away as well if she helped Cressida.[6] When Joanna arrived, she blamed Cressida's behavior on the house being kept too warm, which Lord Cowper blamed on his wife. Despite Cressida's best efforts, Joanna took Cressida with her when she left.[7]

Relationships[]

Romantic[]

He is married to Araminta Cowper. It does not seem to be a happy marriage, as Lord Cowper verbally abuses his wife behind closed doors, such as blaming her for Cressida’s scandalous behavior.[5]

Familial[]

Cressida Cowper[]

Cressida is Lord Cowper's only child.[1] When Cressida began her third social season with no suitors, Lord Cowper planned to arrange a marriage for her,[8] to one of his aged friends.[4] When Cressida failed to attract any offers by the middle of the season, Lord Cowper went through on his threat and arranged her to marry the elderly and fun-hating Lord Greer, who planned to keep Cressida living modestly, wearing somber clothing and withdrawing from society.[9] When Cressida confessed that she was Lady Whistledown, Lord Greer withdrew his proposal, which greatly angered Lord Cowper, who also pulled Cressida's dowry after her reputation got him kicked out of his club.[5] He ultimately sent her away from London to live with his sister Joanna in Wales.[7]
