Lord Leiber was at Lady Danbury's Four Seasons ball, the first ball of the season, when Penelope Bridgerton caught his eye. He approached her, along with Lord Barnell and Lord Garret, and they complimented her gown. As she talked to them about her hobbies, she began to ramble, leading to an awkward situation. Lord Barnell excused himself and other gentlemen and left.
