Marcus Anderson is the brother of Agatha Danbury.

History[]

Marcus came to Mayfair to visit his sister. On his first day in town, he met Violet Bridgerton when he bent down to pick up her dropped glove. After he'd entered the Innovations Ball, they met again and bonded over their children, though his children were all grown and out of the house. Lady Danbury interrupted and introduced them, informing Violet that Marcus was her brother and he was just visiting. Violet welcomed him to Mayfair and he told her he was enjoying his time there already.[1]

Lady Danbury asked Marcus what the purpose of his visit was. He said he was seeking ladies.

At an event, he approached Violet and they talked about their kids and his sister. He then told her that his first marriage wasn't a love match, but he hoped to find that in his second act. She said she'd had a love match, so that was all she ever knew.

Later in the night, he saw his sister leaving and asked her about it. He had heard about her molding society and asked for her help to find a lady. She asked him to leave him out of her raking about town. He assured her he was pure of heart, but she didn't believe him.[2]

When Marcus learned from Lady Whistledown that Colin and Penelope were engaged, he asked his sister if she had a part in that. She said she didn't, but she was pleased with the match. He attended their betrothal party on invitation from Violet, where he played charades. He was present when Cressida Cowper stood up and announced that she was Lady Whistledown followed by Penelope collapsing.[3]

The next day, Marcus returned to Bridgerton House to pick up the hat he'd left there. He admitted to Violet that he could have sent a footman, but he also wanted to see her. She asked him about the tension she'd sensed between him and his sister which he dismissed as childhood drama related to her being the firstborn, but him being the first son.

Lady Danbury started to introduce Marcus to other widows to keep him away from Violet. When he called her out on it, she said that he could speak to any other women in town, but not her friend. He asked what he'd done to deserve such hatred from her, as he wanted to work it out. She said that he ruined her chance at happiness by telling their father she was trying to escape the night before her wedding. She knew it was him because she heard their father thank him. Marcus tried to defend himself, but Lady Danbury stopped him, leaving to find Violet.[4]

Marcus called on Violet at her home and asked if they could explore something together once things settled down for her with her children. She told him he also needed to get his things in order. Knowing she was right, Marcus went to see his sister and he apologized to her for telling her father she was going to leave, which led to her being married off to an older man she despised. He said that he didn't know what she was attempting to run away from and just wanted to keep her around longer so he could prove himself to her. She admitted she'd been overly hard on Marcus, and said she was finally happy and a part of her worried he'd take that away. He said he hoped he could be part of her joy instead. They then went to Colin and Penelope's wedding together.

At the wedding breakfast, Marcus talked to Violet and they said they'd both made peace or were at least making progress on it, clearing the way for them.[5]

Marcus attended John and Francesca's wedding, where he also talked to Violet. He asked her to save him a dance at the next ball, flattering her. At the Dankworth-Finch Ball, they watched Penelope address the ton and confess to being Lady Whistledown, then danced together.[6]
