Marina Crane (née Thompson) was the first wife of Phillip Crane, and the mother of twins Oliver and Amanda Crane. She was also a fourth cousin of the Bridgerton family.

History[]

Early Life[]

Marina met the Bridgertons once many years before, when she was a child. Eloise Bridgerton remembered that she never played with the other kids, and usually read a book, keeping to herself. Marina was originally engaged to George Crane. Sadly, George died in 1815 during the battle of Waterloo and his brother, Sir Phillip, offered to marry Marina in his place. Marina accepted, and by the next year, she gave birth to their twins, Oliver and Amanda.

After the children were born, Marina was struggling with postpartum depression, unknown and not treated at the time. Though nurses told Phillip that she would get better, Marina never did get better. She would often stay in her bedroom, darkened and quiet, and not come out for days at a time. Oliver and Amanda gave her a little bit of comfort, but she couldn't find the energy to take care of them, either. Phillip tried to help her, but Marina just kept becoming more depressed. Phillip eventually let her be, focusing on the children and his work, and Marina sunk deeper into depression.

1823[]

Phillip saw Marina walking to the nearby lake, and realized she was trying to drown herself. Phillip rescued Marina before she could, but Marina developed a lung fever as a result of the freezing water; despite Phillip trying to help her, Marina died three days later.

Phillip later married Eloise, and said he felt trapped by his marriage with Marina, because of her depression. Eloise comforted him, and said Marina wasn't happy as a child either, and probably had suffered from depression for a long time.
