Philippa Finch (née Featherington) is the middle child of the Featherington family.

History[]

1813 Social Season[]

At the start of the 1813 social season, Philippa was presented to society along with her two sisters, Prudence and Penelope. When they were presented to the queen, they struggled to walk as their mother had strapped them so tightly into corsets. Prudence ultimately fainted in the presence of the queen. When Marina Thompson, a distant cousin of theirs, arrived to join society with them, they were in awe of her beauty and threatened by her competition. Lady Featherington, however, continued to promote her daughters over Marina. Despite her efforts, all the callers who arrived at their house the next day were there to see Marina.[1]

When the Featherington sisters learned Marina was pregnant, they wondered why Marina was being kept away from them, secluded in her own room. Their mother told them her condition was catching.[2]

When Prince Fridrich came to town, Philippa gossiped with her sister about his presence.[3]

Philippa was surprised when a caller, Albion Finch, came to the house to see not Marina, but her. She happily greeted him. At a party, they danced together early on, but eventually Philippa ended up crying because after her father spoke to Finch, he was unable to make eye contact with Philippa.[4]

Philippa and Prudence sat in the room as their mother confronted their father over the modiste's bill not being paid.[5]

When Marina announced her engagement to Colin Bridgerton, Philippa and Prudence were excited and hoped Colin would introduce them to his friends. They were jealous when Marina got to go to the modiste for new garments.[6]

When news broke that Marina was pregnant and had been since before her arrival, the engagement was quickly called off. The Featheringtons were left shrouded in scandal. Despite this, Lady Featherington took her daughters to the queen's luncheon, to which they'd received an invitation before the scandal. They weren't at the luncheon for long before Brimsley came and told them on the queen's behalf that they had to leave.[7]

When the Featheringtons received an invitation to an upcoming ball, Lady Featherington was reminded that their credit at the modiste was non-existent, meaning they'd have to wear dresses they'd already worn. Philippa didn't even know that could happen. However, Lord Featherington came home soon after with the winnings from a very large bet and they all got new dresses. Lady Featherington also hoped this reversal of fortune would lead to Albion Finch reconsidering Philippa.

At the ball, Lady Featherington pointed out Mr. Finch to Philippa. They danced together at the ball and when the Featheringtons left to go home, Philippa annoyed Prudence by talking about him non-stop. However, the joy was short-lived as they learned upon arrival at home that Lord Featherington had died.[8]

1814 Social Season[]

The following social season, Philippa and her mother and sisters returned to their house to meet Jack Featherington, her cousin and the new Lord Featherington in the wake of her father's death. Jack assured Philippa that the matter of her marriage dowry for her upcoming nuptials to Albion Finch was settled, much to her delight.[9]

Philippa and Albion Finch were married in a very small intimate ceremony at the Featherington house with only their most immediate relatives to witness the union.[10]

Featherington Ball[]

With all the money Jack had conned out of the ton, Portia decided to throw an elaborate ball. Mrs. Varley asked about the Bridgertons and Sharmas. Philippa and Prudence liked the idea of the drama of it all. Portia said to invite both families, though she was certain they wouldn't come. At the ball, Philippa stood with her mother and sister to watch the fireworks her mother had arranged.[11]

1815 Social Season[]

After a summer spent in the countryside, the Featheringtons returned to Mayfair, including the newlywed Prudence with her husband, Harry Dankworth. Portia told her daughters that their aunt Petunia had died, leaving them a fortune that allowed them to live well in society again.

Prudence and Philippa were shocked later when they learned that Jack had allegedly left a note stating that the firstborn son of one of Portia's daughters would inherit the title and the estate. As they started talking about changes they'd made, Portia sent them home to start working on producing an heir.[12]

Prudence and Philippa both wanted to produce the first heir, but Prudence was more concerned with showing off her husband than coupling with him while Philippa spent more time thinking about how she'd change the house once she was the lady of the house. Prudence even admitted she and Harry had only been together once, on their wedding night. At a ball, Portia confronted both of them and learned that Philippa and Albion had never actually had sex at all, due to a misunderstanding of what they were meant to do, while Prudence and Harry hadn't done it a second time because Prudence didn't enjoy it. Portia sent them both home to do their duties to produce an heir, which they did.[13] Wanting to guarantee a male heir, Prudence and Philippa drank a potion prepared by Mrs. Varley, who said her own mother had used it to have five boys. The drink didn't taste bad, but they immediately rushed for the chamber pot after drinking it.

Later, at the Innovations Ball, Prudence, Philippa, and Portia were bewildered to see Penelope dancing with Lord Debling. Philippa said she felt sick. Prudence did as well, but Philippa really meant it, as she ran out. Portia thought they stopped taking the potion and Prudence confirmed that they had.[14]

Philippa was pleased to be pregnant, though Prudence quickly grew tired of her boasting about it.[15]

Prudence and Philippa were both shocked when they learned that Penelope was engaged to Colin. Later, when the queen offered a monetary reward to anyone who helped unmask Lady Whistledown, Philippa suggested checking the parish registry, not realizing it wouldn't be that simple. While they talked about that, Portia came in and said they needed to start treating Penelope better and she'd be attending the betrothal party with Penelope without them so they could think about how they'd change their behavior toward their sister.[16]

As Portia began to plan Penelope's wedding, Philippa lamented that she was getting much nicer things than Philippa had, which Portia attributed to her not marrying a man with unlimited funds.[17] As the wedding planning continued, Philippa started to notice a change in Prudence, as she'd been nicer to all of those close to her. Philippa then attended the wedding with Albion and her family.[18]

Prudence and Philippa decided to throw a ball, which Harry and Albion supported. Since they were unable to afford a lot, they worried that what Mrs. Varley put together wouldn't have all the things they wanted. But when the two couples entered, they were delighted to see everything they'd asked for. They thanked Portia, believing she must have paid for everything.

The queen came to the ball and prompted Penelope to address the crowd and identify herself as Lady Whistledown. After her speech, couples started to dance, including Albion and Philippa.

Later, Philippa gave birth to their first child, a girl they named Philomena.[19]

Personality[]

Not exactly known for her smarts or cleverness, Philippa is the middle Featherington child. She's merely focused on one thing: finding herself a husband.

Relationships[]

Romantic[]

Albion Finch[]

Albion Finch came to the house of the Featheringtons to court Philippa. However, because of their lack of a dowry due to gambling, her father made up a rumor about Philippa and told it to Finch so he would stop courting her, leaving Philippa heartbroken. After Lord Featherington won a significant amount of money from rigging a fight, they continued their courtship. They were married the next social season.

Familial[]

Archibald Featherington[]

Lord Featherington is Philippa's father.

Portia Featherington[]

Portia is Philippa's mother. The two are close because of their shared desire for Philippa to find her match during the 1813 season.

Prudence Dankworth[]

Prudence is Philippa's older sister. The two are seen to both share a common interest in finding their respective matches and are eager to do whatever it takes to secure such a match. However, Prudence is implied to be envious of her younger sister when Philippa secures a match before her.

Penelope Bridgerton[]

Penelope is Philippa's younger sister. The two are not seen as close because of their difference in feelings towards the idea of finding matches within the 1813 season. Philippa desperately wants to find her match, and Penelope doesn't seem to show any interest in the idea.
