Phillip Cavender is a member of the ton who attempted to rape Sophie with his friends.

History[]

1817[]

While Phillip Cavender was on tour in Europe, his parents hired Sophie as an upstairs maid. Upon his return, Phillip began making unwanted advances towards Sophie, constantly cornering her in the hall. When Sophie rebuffed his innuendos and suggestions, he became aggressive. Although Phillip's advances were difficult to avoid, Sophie felt somewhat protected by the presence of his parents.

When Phillip's parents left town to visit Mrs. Cavender's sister in Brighton, Phillip hosted a party and invited Benedict, a friend of a friend whom he barely knew. Benedict, just recovering from a cold, reluctantly attended after being urged by a friend.

After being chased around the house for two hours during Phillip's party, Sophie decided to leave the Cavender home. She packed her belongings and planned to stay at a small inn. However, as she slipped out of the house, a drunken Phillip spotted her and chased her down.

While Phillip and his friends groped Sophie, with the intention of raping her, Benedict called out to Phillip. After spending a miserable four hours at the party, Benedict intended to inform Phillip of his departure before leaving. Phillip and his friends pushed Sophie back and forth and invited Benedict to join them. Realizing that Sophie was not enjoying the attention, Benedict demanded that they release her and ask for her consent, angering Phillip and his friends. Phillip threatened to fire Sophie if she didn't comply, but Benedict offered to find her employment at his mother's home. Sophie left with Benedict, prompting Phillip to angrily declare that Benedict would no longer be invited to any of his future parties.[1]
