Tilley Arnold is a widow who became interested in Benedict Bridgerton.
History[]
Tilley was at Lord Hawkins' presentation of his new hot air balloon. There, she met Benedict Bridgerton when he made a comment about the balloon being good to escape eager mamas. He apologized, having not realized a lady could overhear, but she said a lady could be interested in engineering. Then she defended the technology to everyone in the tent, saying it would drive ingenuity forward.
They met again at the Innovations Ball, where Tilley finally introduced herself and told him she'd seen his show of brute strength in pulling the escaped hot air balloon back. The two of them then danced together and Tilley let her hands roam over Benedict's body.[1]
Benedict came to Tilley's house to see her and they had sex. Then, after seeing each other at the ballet performance, they went back to her house and had sex again.[2]
Tilley continued hooking up with Benedict and went with him to Colin and Penelope's betrothal party, where they discussed the queen's offer to monetarily reward anyone who helped unmask Lady Whistledown and played charades. They were all shocked when Cressida Cowper stood up and declared that she was Lady Whistledown.[3]
During one of their trysts, Tilley invited Benedict to come to a dinner party she was throwing for him and her friend, Paul. At the party, Tilley told Benedict that she met Paul at the theater and he was a patron of the arts. They realized that their relationships with Tilley had a lot in common, as she'd used the same language with each of us.
Later, Paul left Benedict out on the balcony and went to Tilley. They talked about Benedict and then kissed. He walked in on them kissing and after he made his presence known, Paul asked if Benedict wanted to join them upstairs. Benedict smiled and laughed, but then said he had something important he had to do and left abruptly.[4]
Tilley came to call on Benedict, but he wasn't home, so she left him a note asking him to let her explain. When Benedict came to see her, she explained that she and Paul had a relationship similar to her relationship with Benedict, but Paul also enjoying being intimate with men. She was going to talk to Benedict alone about the possibility, but then they got caught and Paul felt they'd had a moment. She spoke to him about the diversity of humans and how two people being attracted to each other could never be unnatural. She asked him to think about how he felt and if he didn't want it, they could continue just the two of them as they had before. Benedict later came to see Tilley and told her he'd thought about their offer. He kissed Tilley, then leaned back and kissed Paul as well.[5] Tilley, Benedict, and Paul had sex, but when Benedict next visited her, Tilley admitted that being with both of them at the same time made her realize she didn't want to share Benedict. She asked him to pursue something more serious and exclusive with her. Benedict said that being free had made him realize how much he enjoyed it and he wasn't ready to give that up yet. Tilley said she understood and was happy to know it was possible to want to commit to someone.[6]
