Violet Bridgerton (née Ledger) is the Dowager Viscountess Bridgerton. She is the widow of Edmund Bridgerton, and the mother of the eight Bridgerton siblings.

History[]

Early Years[]

Violet was born to Lord and Lady Ledger. She had a somewhat difficult relationship with her mother but had a good relationship with her father who fondly called her 'brains' and would make her birthday hats for her birthday.

Early Reign of Queen Charlotte[]

While preparations were underway for the coronation of King George III and Queen Charlotte, Violet discussed her excitement with her governess as she was having her hair braided. Later, the two went on a walk outside with Violet's horse where they discussed the king's new marriage and her mother's thoughts on the matter, with her governess telling her to not discuss her mother's thoughts with anyone outside of the family.

While embroidering behind the couch, Violet overheard her mother and father discussing the new queen and the changes that were coming to the ton. While Lady Ledger was against the new changes, Violet and her father were fine with it as Violet argued that the new members of the ton were just as worthy of their titles as they were, as they'd all been given their titles by the king. Violet also took the opportunity to request being taught advanced mathematics by her governess.

When Lord and Lady Ledger received an invitation from Lord and Lady Danbury inviting them to the first ball of the season, Violet asked if she could come as she wanted to see the gardens, but her mother refused.[1]

Violet and her father attended the funeral of Lord Danbury.

Violet saw her father making a birthday hat for one of his friends who was feeling sad. When her father showed doubt about giving it to them, Violet told him that he had to as his hats brought cheer and suggested that he add paper flowers.[2]

While "getting out of [her] mother's hair," Violet took a walk with her father where she met Lady Danbury.

Lady Danbury spotted Violet playing with her father in the garden while on a walk with Duke Adolphus.

Violet attended the ball to celebrate the birth of Prince George and was excited to see the queen, who had not yet arrived. Her mother did not like her manners and thought she shouldn't be out in society yet, while her father disagreed. Violet waved to Lady Danbury, whom she thought looked marvelous.[3]

Marriage to Edmund and Widowhood[]

Violet married the Viscount Edmund Bridgerton, with whom she was very much in love, and they had eight children together. Violet would also make birthday hats for Edmund and their children like her father had made for her.

In 1803, while Violet was pregnant with their eighth child, Edmund was out with their eldest son, Anthony, hunting, and paused in the garden to pick flowers for Violet where he was stung by a bee and died as a result. His death devastated Violet. Her subsequent delivery was a hard one, as her baby was in a bad position, and the doctors were trying to make Anthony choose between saving his mother or saving the baby. Violet cried that Edmund should make the choice, and howled in sadness that he was no longer with them.

Violet and her daughter, Hyacinth, survived, but Violet was in a deep state of sadness. She lamented how she wished that she had died in childbirth so she could be with Edmund. She said that Edmund was her air, and without him, there was no air.[4]

Over the next ten years, she overcame her sadness and began to focus on her daughters and their debut into high society.

Daphne's Debut[]

At the start of the 1813 social season, Violet prepared for her eldest daughter, Daphne, to make her social debut. When the day arrived, Violet was annoyed because her eldest son, Anthony, was not with them as they prepared to leave. He ended up meeting them just before they entered the palace so Daphne could be presented to the queen. Violet escorted her daughter to her presentation, where Queen Charlotte declared her flawless, which pleased Violet.

The next day, at the Danbury ball, Daphne attracted much attention from potential suitors. However, Anthony was reluctant to let her socialize with any of them and ultimately forced Daphne to leave the event early.

Violet and Daphne then attended a show, where they were invited to sit in Lady Danbury's box. During the show, Lady Danbury and Violet decided that Simon and Daphne would make a good match. When Anthony heard about this, he rejected it, saying Simon was never planning to marry and therefore was a bad match. Violet called him on his behavior toward Daphne's courting, revealing that she knew about his affair with Siena Rosso. She encouraged him to think about if he was Daphne's older brother or the man of the house.[5]

Violet and Lady Danbury were pleased at Simon and Daphne's relationship, unaware they were faking it. Violet was delighted when she was invited to tea by the queen. When Violet found out Anthony had betrothed Daphne to Nigel Berbrooke, she was outraged and scolded Anthony. During a picnic, Violet watched Nigel blackmail the Bridgerton family to force Daphne to marry him, which upset her.

Violet went to tea with the queen, where hearing the queen call her secretary a gossip gave her the idea to use the maids to find gossip on Nigel they could use to rid themselves of him. They learned he had an illegitimate child he refused to support and spread that until Lady Whistledown picked it up and published it so everyone heard it and believed it. Nigel fled town, freeing them of him.[6]

Violet became concerned when time passed and Simon did not propose. She discussed these concerns with Lady Danbury, who said she wasn't worried about it.

At a future event, she tried to set her three eldest sons up with eligible ladies. She also noticed, and discussed with Lady Danbury, Cressida Cowper's relationship with Prince Friedrich. Later on, at a fitting for Daphne, Lady Cowper told Violet that it was fortunate for herself and her daughter that Daphne was loyal to the Duke, as Cressida would not have a hope with the prince if Daphne went for him. At the ball that evening, Violet was disappointed when Daphne danced with the prince.[7]

At the palace, Violet waited with Daphne for the queen to arrive. She soon arrived with Prince Friedrich, who gave Daphne a necklace.

Later, Violet told Daphne that wearing the prince's necklace sent a signal to Simon that she was going to marry the prince and she thought it unwise to limit her options so early. She wanted to know what happened with Daphne and Simon. Daphne finally admitted that it was all a ruse to attract better suitors and it had worked. Violet said all she wanted was for Daphne to find love and what she had with Simon was love, despite Daphne's insistence that it wasn't real. At a party, she was upset to see Daphne continue to pursue Prince Friedrich instead of Simon and to see Anthony's attention captured by Siena, who was performing. She presented a lady to Anthony, but he was disinterested. Both Anthony and Daphne left the party early, leaving Violet to get a bit drunk with Colin, who then escorted her home as they both laughed.[8]

The next morning, Violet denied having overindulged and insisted she had simply slept poorly. Mrs. Wilson went to get her raw eggs and garlic. After she left, Daphne came in and told her mother she was engaged. She pretended to be happy, assuming it was Prince Friedrich, but cheered up when Daphne said it was actually Simon. She was thrilled that Daphne would be able to marry for love as she'd always wanted.

Violet went with Daphne, Simon, and Lady Danbury on a walk, where the happy couple didn't seem as happy as expected, which Violet attributed to nerves.

Violet took Daphne to get her wedding dress as well as some new nightdresses.

When their special license was denied, Violet went with Daphne and Simon to appeal directly to the queen. When she was swayed, Daphne and Simon were quickly married. At the reception, Daphne fled the room in tears. Violet found her in her old bedroom and tried to explain to her about the expectations of her wedding night. Daphne had many questions, but their conversation was cut short when Rose told her the carriage was ready and waiting. The whole family came outside to see Simon and Daphne off.[9]

With Daphne gone, Violet explained to Hyacinth, who inquired, that Daphne had important duties now as a duchess. She also said Eloise had things to do to prepare for her own debut, though Eloise wasn't interested in doing any of those things, saying she wasn't good at any of them. Violet simply said she might be better at them if she spent time on them as much as she spent time writing in her journal. She continued to try to get Eloise excited about her debut. while they were at the modiste getting her hems lowered, they ran into Marina and Lady Featherington, who invited Violet, Anthony, and Colin over to dine with them and Marina.

At the dinner, Violet spoke to Marina about her life prior to her arrival in London and made an effort to get to know her better. However, this all became for naught when Lady Whistledown's next report came out and revealed that Marina was pregnant and had been since before her arrival, abruptly ending their engagement and shrouding Marina in scandal.[10]

With Marina and the Featheringtons shrouded in scandal, Eloise suggested delaying her debut for a few more years so it wouldn't be tarnished with the scandal. Violet assured her everything would be fine and said she just had to keep smiling. Daphne heard word of the scandal and she and Simon returned to London to support her family, which Violet said might be the answer to their problems as the support of the duke and duchess would do much for maintaining the family's good name. When Daphne asked about events upcoming that she could attend as support, Violet told her the queen was having a luncheon and Daphne pledged to secure an invitation.

The Bridgerton family attended the luncheon together, which delighted Violet, who loved having her family back together. At the luncheon, Lady Featherington approached Violet and said they were both duped by Marina, but Violet simply ignored her and walked away.

Violet was surprised later when Eloise wanted to join her elder siblings and mother at a concert. She worried she'd been putting too much pressure on Eloise to join things before she was ready. Eloise said it was just because she knew the queen would be there and needed to speak to her about Lady Whistledown.[11]

Violet came to her family to tell them Francesca would soon be coming home. When the others planned to tell Francesca everything she'd missed, Violet commented that it had been a very busy season.

When Daphne came to Violet and told her that she and Simon had decided to go their separate ways, Violet encouraged her instead to consider forgiveness. Daphne said it wasn't that, but Simon choosing a grudge over happiness. While they were talking, Lady Featherington approached and expressed her and her daughters' sadness at not being invited to the ball Daphne was throwing. Violet suggested she explain to her daughters how she got into that position, but Daphne interjected and said they could make room for the Featheringtons to come.

When Violet arrived at the ball with Eloise, Eloise immediately drew the attention of some men. Violet suggested she see it as a rehearsal before her own coming out, but Eloise only felt uncomfortable. Later, Daphne came to her mother and asked if it was different for men to know they're in love. She and Simon had agreed to one final dance, a waltz, before parting ways. Violet expressed how much she missed dancing with Daphne's father. She told Daphne about the last time they danced before he died. And then she told Daphne that their love was not without its trials. But they loved each other and made that choice every single day. Daphne still didn't believe there was anything she could do. Despite this, she and Simon reconciled that very night while dancing in the rain.

Some time later, Violet was present when Daphne gave birth to a son, Violet's first grandchild.[12]

Eloise's Debut and Anthony's Search[]

The following social season, Violet went once again to the queen's palace, to present her next daughter, Eloise. Eloise was a frantic mess, begging her mother to make excuses and let her get out of this, but Violet assured her that no matter what, Eloise would always be a diamond to her. Just as Eloise was supposed to walk to the Queen, the return of Lady Whistledown's scandal sheets cut the ceremony short.

When Anthony asked her for her ring, she questioned why, as he didn't have a match in mind. He said he wanted to be ready when he did find one and she told him it was in safe keeping at Aubrey Hall. She was excited that Anthony had decided that he would seriously search for a wife.

At Lady Danbury's ball, Violet comforted Eloise, who was nervous, saying that even Daphne was nervous at first. She then drew the attention of many ladies when she loudly announced that Anthony had declared his intent to find a wife that season.

After the ball, Violet told Eloise she might have more fun at the next ball if she danced with someone. She also encouraged Anthony to get to know some of the ladies better. He replied that he hadn't found any worthy of being his viscountess as his standards were high. She told him he'd end up alone with such expectations.

At the queen's ball, Edwina Sharma was named the season's diamond. Violet said she was lovely and Anthony declared that he was going to marry her.[13]

Violet continued to push Eloise to try to find a match, saying she just wanted Eloise to find happiness. During the races, Violet sat with Lady Danbury, watching Anthony and Edwina interact. Lady Danbury warned Violet that Kate Sharma, Edwina's elder sister, was against Anthony marrying Edwina because he didn't want a love match, something Edwina hoped to find. While Lady Danbury said Kate's mind needed to be changed, Violet said the viscount should also change his mind. Later, their family attended a soiree at Lady Danbury's. Anthony wasn't invited, which he knew was because of Kate. Violet told him to let that be a lesson to him.[14] Violet noticed Anthony watching Kate, despite carrying on a conversation with Edwina.

Visit to Aubrey Hall[]

The Bridgertons all traveled to Aubrey Hall, including Daphne and baby Augie. When they arrived, Violet retrieved her ring for Anthony, asking if he was sure. He said Edwina would make the perfect viscountess. While her children played their annual game of Pall-Mall, Violet talked to Mary and Lady Danbury. She and Mary bonded over the loss of their husbands. As they watched Daphne play, she and Lady Danbury also noted that their matchmaking had worked well the previous year and hoped their efforts this year would also bring success.

That night, Violet and Lady Danbury eavesdropped as Anthony talked to Daphne and Edwina talked to Kate about each other.

Violet came to Edmund's grave, and found Anthony there. Though he said he'd leave, Violet encouraged him to stay. Violet told Anthony how she saw him weighed down by his courtship, when he should be joyful and happy. Anthony insisted he was content, but Violet said his duties should not take precedence over love. She told him that Edmund was both a dutiful viscount and loving man, and believed Anthony is also capable of finding that love too. Anthony refused to find love, because he couldn't forget the grief and heartbreak he saw Violet suffer after Edmund's death and didn't want someone else to go through that because of him.[4]

Hearts and Flowers Ball[]

With Daphne's assistance, Violet began preparing for their annual Hearts and Flowers ball. Violet was impressed by Daphne's instincts with the flowers. Later, as their guests arrived, Violet greeted them. She later collected Eloise and told her to behave as they were hosting, pushing her toward a table with other young ladies.

Later, she talked to Daphne about Anthony and Edwina's relationship. Daphne said she liked Edwina and knew Edwina was a wonderful diamond, but always pictured Anthony being with someone more like himself and would require more of a challenge than Edwina provided. Violet agreed with her on that.

Violet introduced Eloise to Lord Morrison and compelled the two of them to dance together. When Eloise left the dance floor before the end of the dance, Violet said she'd chosen Morrison specifically for Eloise as he shared her rebellious spirit. Eloise said that her rebellion wasn't just a part she was playing. She then said she knew she was a disappointment to Violet, but she just wanted to go to bed and went upstairs.

As everyone was preparing to leave Aubrey Hall, Anthony brought out a ring and proposed to Edwina. She accepted and Daphne and Violet shared a knowing look.[15]

Dinner with the Sheffields[]

Violet immediately started planning for Anthony and Edwina's wedding, even though the queen had taken on the duty of planning all the particulars. Violet asked Eloise to help her, but Eloise made an excuse that she was attending a lecture on flower arranging with Penelope.

At the lake, Violet talked to Edwina about possible colors for the wedding.

When Violet found out that Lord and Lady Sheffield were back in town to meet Edwina and Anthony, she expressed surprise. She also told Anthony that she hated to see him marry someone he didn't truly love. She wanted all her children to experience the joy of an exceptional marriage. He didn't even seem to be excited to be getting married, but he said he wouldn't dishonor Edwina by breaking off the engagement. Violet said that Edwina could end things and might if she knew Anthony's true feelings. She encouraged him to think hard about it because it would break her heart to see him regret his marriage and she knew it would break his father's heart as well.

Violet went to dinner with the Sharmas, the Sheffields, and Anthony. Things became tense when the Sheffields brought up their feelings about Mary rejecting the match they'd found for her to marry a commoner. Violet tried to change the subject, but was unsuccessful. Things reached a peak when the Sheffields mentioned they'd set aside a trust for Edwina if she marries an English nobleman. Violet asked Anthony if he knew about this, and he shook his head. Anthony confronted the Sheffields about their behavior and insisted they leave immediately as they'd been disrespectful to the Sharma family. Once they were gone, Anthony said that he and Violet would be leaving as well. When Kate followed them out, Anthony sent Violet home on her own and stayed to speak to Kate.[16]

Anthony and Edwina's Wedding[]

On the day of Anthony and Edwina's wedding, Violet pressured all her children to get ready. Once they were ready, they all went to the wedding together. At the wedding, she spoke to Lady Danbury for the first time since the dinner with the Sheffields and realized Lady Danbury knew something she wasn't saying.

When Edwina abruptly stopped the wedding in the middle and walked out, Violet wondered if it was due to what happened at the dinner with the Sheffields. Violet saw Anthony glancing at Daphne, and deduced that she knew something; she demanded Daphne tell her what she knew.

Violet then found Lady Danbury, who apologized for not telling her about the Sheffields. Violet said that Daphne confirmed something that she had suspected for a long time and knew Lady Danbury had as well. The two shared a laugh at the absurdity of the whole situation. Violet asked if she thought Edwina would return to the altar and Lady Danbury said that only Edwina could answer that.

Edwina later decided that she wouldn't be marrying Anthony. As she left, Violet overheard some women gossiping about why. Daphne saw this and escorted her mother home.[17]

Harmony Ball[]

In the aftermath of the aborted wedding, Violet said their family needed to present a united front. Anthony agreed and the family promenaded together. After they and the Sharmas were shunned by the ton, Violet and Lady Danbury decided to throw a ball to show everyone that there was no ill will between the two families.

Ahead of the ball, the two families went to the art gallery together, where they spread word of the ball. Then they prepared for the ball. However, at the anticipated start time, they were surprised that no one showed up. Violet was prepared to cancel the evening, but Anthony called the younger children downstairs and the two families danced together. After a lively dance, Violet said it was odd that no one believed their story. Lady Danbury noticed that the maids were reading a new Whistledown and they learned that Lady Whistledown had reported that Eloise was socializing with political radicals, enshrouding the family in a new scandal.[18]

Kate's Accident and Featherington Ball[]

When Kate was unconscious after being thrown from her horse, Violet told Mrs. Wilson to send roses and lilacs. Benedict asked if they were going to the Featherington Ball. She wasn't sure, but said it was a good sign that they were invited at all. When Anthony came in and insulted all his siblings until they left, Violet asked how Kate was doing. He said he didn't know because he hadn't been to see her, which surprised and worried Violet.

When Violet learned that Kate was awake, she shared that news with Anthony, who cried in relief. Violet apologized for Anthony having to watch his father die and for how she acted afterward. It weighed on her and she wished she could go back and change it. Anthony said he didn't think he could ever see Kate again. Violet told him that losing Edmund was the most difficult time of her life, but she wouldn't trade their love to avoid that pain. She cautioned Anthony not to lose Kate.

Violet overheard Anthony and Gregory talking about Edmund and smiled in silent thrill hearing her sons bonding about their father.

Violet and the rest of the Bridgertons attended the Featherington Ball, where they were greeted with whispers. Eloise tried to leave, saying she didn't want to disappoint her mother, but Violet said it would disappoint her to have Eloise start to care what others thought. She didn't want Eloise to keep things from her anymore and encouraged Eloise to move forward. Later that night, Anthony and Kate became engaged after confessing their love for each other.

Six months later, Violet oversaw as her family gathered at Aubrey Hall for another lively Pall Mall game. She watched from the sidelines and tended to Augie while they bickered over the game.[19]

Princess Royal's Death[]

When the princess royal died, leaving Queen Charlotte and King George III without a legitimate heir, Violet received the news.[20]

Soon afterward, Violet was invited to tea with the queen. At tea, Queen Charlotte asked Violet how she got her children to want to marry. Violet said it helped that they were in love, but Queen Charlotte said her children were in love, but not with anyone acceptable for them to marry. Through this conversation, Queen Charlotte decided to have Brimsley compile a list of eligible women who would make acceptable brides for her sons.[21]

Lighting Candles[]

On Edmund's birthday, Violet went to the church to light a candle. While she was there, Lady Danbury came in. Violet told her about her father naming birthday hats for her as a child and how she made them for Edmund and their own children. His birthday always served as a reminder that there were no more hats to make. Lady Danbury told Violet she was fortunate, a remark Violet didn't understand.

At a later meeting, Lady Danbury explained that her marriage was filled with hatred instead of love as Violet and Edmund's had been, which is why she felt that Violet was fortunate.[1]

Blooming Garden[]

When Violet started to feel sexual desire for the first time since the death of her husband, she confided in Lady Danbury, who said that she hadn't felt sexual desire until after her husband had died. She told Violet it was okay to want another man and to seek that kind of company.[2]

While preparing for a walk, Violet and Lady Danbury discussed Violet's plans to start anew. Lady Danbury said she was happy for her. When Lady Danbury stepped out for a minute, Violet noticed a birthday hat on the mantle like her father had made for her. On their walk, a now-suspicious Violet questioned Lady Danbury about her garden blooming after her husband's death. Lady Danbury said she had loved and been loved, but that was all she could say as she was discreet. When Violet probed, Lady Danbury asked if she'd ever told Violet about the queen's brother. Violet was surprised, which Lady Danbury attributed to her discretion.

After the walk, Violet had her servants find a crate from her father's house in the attic and she pulled out some of the birthday hats he'd made. She had them around the room when Lady Danbury came to tea. She told Lady Danbury she was going to pack them away again. She and Lady Danbury shared meaningful eye contact and Lady Danbury said she should keep the hats out because they were lovely and cheerful.[3]

1815 Season[]

At the start of the 1815 season, Violet prepared for Francesca's debut. The morning of, she and her children pressed their ears to Francesca's door, listening for her, only to find that she wasn't in the room after all, but was playing pianoforte.

The family went together to the palace for the debut. Francesca told her mother that she just wanted some people, so Violet worried she'd find it overwhelming. Francesca assured her mother that she'd find her own way, even if it was chaotic.

At a societal event, Violet talked to Kate about her concerns for her children. She admitted she didn't understand Eloise's new friendship with Cressida, but was scared of interfering with Eloise after her previous season. Kate expressed her admiration for Violet and said she hoped to be half the viscountess she was. Violet apologized for being in Kate's way and promised to move into a dower house as soon as she found one. Kate told her not to worry as in India, mothers often stayed in the home after their daughters were married, so Kate welcomed the company.

After attending Lady Danbury's Four Seasons ball, Kate and Anthony decided to extend their honeymoon and trust Violet to continue her duties as viscountess until Kate was ready.

Violet then talked to Francesca, asking how she found her first ball. Francesca said that she wasn't sure she needed what Violet and Edmund had had to be happy. Violet asked that she be open to love if it came her way and Francesca said they'd see what happened.[22]

Lady Danbury came to the Bridgerton house and she, Violet, and Francesca discussed possible good matches for Francesca, including several men with an interest in music. Violet then took her and Eloise to the modiste, wanting to get them dresses that would attract the queen's attention, as Lady Danbury said she was still looking for the season's standout debutante.

At the next ball, Violet promised she wouldn't push suitors on Eloise, but encouraged her to make friends with the other ladies, so she'd have more than just Cressida. Violet then asked Francesca if she wanted to greet the queen, but Francesca was more interested in meeting the suitors they'd discussed. Violet introduced Francesca to Lord Petri, but the conversation between the two didn't last long.

Lady Danbury saw Violet watching Francesca and Lord Petri and encouraged her to let Francesca stay in her natural sphere.[23]

Violet was delighted to have another of her daughter's earn the queen's favor and said Francesca would have her pick of suitors. At the hot air balloon debut, Violet watched as the queen introduced Violet to Lord Samadani, whom she'd brought from Vienna just to meet her.

While walking into the Innovations Ball, Violet dropped a glove and when she bent to pick it up, she found a man had already grabbed it and handed it back to her. Inside the ball, they met again and bonded over their children. When Violet mentioned she'd never seen him before, Lady Danbury interrupted and informed Violet that he was Marcus Anderson, her brother, who was visiting. Violet welcomed him to Mayfair and he said he was enjoying his time there already.

Later in the night, Colin came to Violet and asked her what she wanted for Francesca. She said she wanted the same as she'd wanted for herself and other children: happiness and passion. Colin asked her about her previous claim that the best foundation for love was friendship. She told him she still believed that and that was how she and Edmund had started. She said they'd learned the feelings were more when he gathered up the courage to ask. Colin said he hoped that if Francesca found herself in that position, she'd be brave enough to ask. Violet, realizing he was talking about himself, said she hoped that as well.[24]

Violet waited with Francesca and her other children for Francesca's callers to arrive. They were expecting Lord Samadani, so their cook prepared mille-feuille. When a caller was announced, Violet was surprised to see John Stirling instead. He and Francesca sat together in silence until another caller, this time Lord Samadani, was announced.

As they prepared to go to a ball, Violet talked to Francesca about Lord Samadani, but reminded Francesca that if she wanted, she could refuse. Francesca was more interested in John, but Violet didn't know his family well as they were known for keeping to themselves. Francesca spotted John and approached him. After an awkward conversation, John excused himself and quickly left, causing Francesca to declare to Violet that she wasn't interested in him.

When Colin told Violet he was going to stay in for the night instead of joining his family at the queen's ball, Violet told him he was always one of her most sensitive children, but warned him not to live to please others. She also told him that Portia had been bragging that Lord Debling was going to propose to Penelope.

While watching Francesca dance with Lord Samadani, Violet started talking to Marcus about his sister, saying she molded society to her will. He was surprised to hear that and admitted he was still getting to know her again. He also told her his first marriage hadn't started as a love match, but he'd grown fond of his wife. He was looking for a love match for his 'second act'.

Violet was shocked when Francesca came to her and asked to leave early, but said they just needed to find her brother and sister first. They went home and Francesca played the music John had given her, telling Violet he had it rearranged just as she suggested.[25]

Violet was ecstatic when Colin came home with Penelope and announced that they were engaged. Violet attended the betrothal party Kate planned for them. She and Lady Danbury watched the happy couple from above and said anyone who doubted the pairing was a fool. When Marcus approached them, Violet said she'd invited him when they ran into each other while promenading.

At the party, Francesca brought John to tell a story, but he struggled to speak and was unable to tell it. Once he'd walked away, she spoke to Lady Danbury about the match, questioning if it was what was best for Francesca. Later, John approached them again and was finally able to tell the story.

As the guests played charades, Violet and Lady Danbury were excited to learn that Kate and Anthony were expecting. They were all then shocked when, as Anthony prepared to share the news with everyone else, Cressida Cowper suddenly stood up and declared herself Lady Whistledown. Shortly after that, Penelope collapsed.[26]

The next day, Marcus came back to Bridgerton House to retrieve his hat, which he'd left there. He admitted he could have sent a footman, but also wanted to see Violet. She asked him what the tension was between him and his sister and he said it was just stuff from their childhood. She was the firstborn, but he was the first son, but he felt they would work through it.

Later, while in the drawing room, Francesca called the family's attention to her and announced that she and John were getting married, news they all celebrated. Knowing the queen wanted Francesca with Lord Samadani, they asked Violet to talk to the queen on their behalf before they announced their betrothal. Violet suggested they wait until the very end of the season so they could escape to their country homes, marry quietly, and the queen could start over next season. Francesca said they didn't want to wait and wanted to start setting up their lives soon.

Violet confided in Lady Danbury about their request and Lady Danbury realized she didn't want to do it because she had doubts about the match and worried they would show when she did. Violet said she knew her doubts didn't matter, but she didn't want the queen to know about them because then they would matter because she could oppose the match.

At the Mondrich party, Francesca went to Violet and asked her to talk to the queen at the party. She promised she'd get an audience with the queen at a later date if it didn't happen at the party. Francesca realized that Violet didn't support the match and said that what they had was easy and she loved him, defending her choice.[27]

Violet was shocked when an issue of Lady Whistledown, written by Cressida pretending to be the author, was brought to her that heavily disparaged the Bridgerton family. She was relieved when, while she was still reading the first issue, another issue arrived, this one written by the real Lady Whistledown.

Violet talked to Lady Danbury about the issues and agreed it was fortunate that Lady Whistledown published when she did, because it saved the family a lot of scandal. Violet asked if Lady Danbury could get her an audience with the queen so she could talk to her about Francesca and John and Lady Danbury said she didn't recommended because the queen was so upset over Lady Whistledown. Violet regretted not talking to her at the party like Francesca had asked. Violet also noticed that Lady Danbury was upset and said that she valued their friendship, not just what Lady Danbury could do for her. Lady Danbury appreciated Violet's friendship and said that meant a lot to her.

Violet then worked with Portia to finish planning Colin and Penelope's wedding breakfast. She was surprised later when Marcus came to call on her. He asked her if they could explore something together once things were settled with Francesca and John. Violet said she was open to that, but they both needed to get things in order before that could happen.

At the wedding breakfast, Violet learned that Marcus had finally made peace with his sister, clearing the way for them, while Violet also felt a resolution was coming for her and Francesca. Violet was then shocked when the queen entered and dismissed everyone except the Bridgertons because she suspected that someone from their family was hiding something from her. At first, Francesca stepped forward to tell the queen that even though her majesty had arranged for her to be with Lord Samadani, she was actually in love with John Stirling and asked for her permission to marry him. The queen said that she knew all along about how Francesca felt about John and Lord Samadani and granted her blessing. However, that was not why she was there. Then she said she knew one of them was Lady Whistledown and demanded she reveal herself. When Anthony insisted that if something like that were happening in his house, he would have stopped it, the queen backed off, but said she would find her soon.[28]

Violet was shocked when John and Francesca told her that, in addition to getting a special license to have a small wedding at home, they were planning to move to Scotland after the wedding.

Violet talked to Lady Danbury about her burgeoning relationship with Marcus. Lady Danbury insisted that Violet didn't need her permission and all she cared about was that they were happy. Violet subtly confirmed that she knew that her father had an affair with Lady Danbury and said that all she needed to know was that Lady Danbury was a a good friend.

Violet then talked to Francesca again and said that she was okay with Francesca moving away, and that she appreciated Francesca showing her there was more than one way to fall in love.

After John and Francesca's wedding, Francesca asked Violet to play a duet with her, as the wedding had moved Violet to tears and the first time Francesca had done that was when she started playing. Violet agreed and they played a quick tune together. After the ceremony Marcus asked Violet to save him a dance at the upcoming Dankworth-Finch ball to which she said yes.

Violet was shocked when Penelope sent her a letter, revealing that she was Lady Whistledown, Colin also asked to talk to Violet to explain the situation. She revealed the news to the whole ton at the Dankworth-Finch ball, where Violet also danced with Marcus.

Months later, Violet was pleased when Penelope gave birth to a son. They also celebrated the publication of Colin's book and Penelope's continued publication of her column under her own name.[29]

Personality[]

All warmth, wisdom and love, the Bridgerton matriarch manages to treat everyone with unmatched kindness and respect. But don't mistake her compassion for weakness - as she's an impressive match for anyone who dares come close to interfering with her family. She'd like nothing more than for her children to marry - not for convenience or opportunity, but for love.

Relationships[]

Romantic[]

Edmund Bridgerton[]

She was married to Lord Bridgerton until his death while she was pregnant with their eighth child, Hyacinth. She fell into a deep state of sorrow and sadness for a long time after Edmund's death, unable to do more than the bare minimum to survive and wishing she'd died while giving birth so she didn't have to live without him.[4] Violet has expressed that despite the heartbreak she faced, she would still choose to live the years she had with Edmund again, because they found true love and it was worth the pain.[19] More than ten years after his death, she still touched the spot where his head rested on the pillow every morning after waking up.[12]

Marcus Anderson[]

Violet met Marcus when he bent to pick up her dropped glove. They later met again inside the ball and she learned he was Lady Danbury's brother.[24]

Familial[]

Anthony Bridgerton[]

Anthony is Violet's eldest son. She fought with him after Daphne debuted when she was trying to match Daphne with Simon, something Anthony was against.[5] When Anthony decided to marry, Violet was eager to matchmake for him, but they argued over who would be a good match.[13] Violet knew Anthony was more interested in Kate than Edwina and tried to tell him to find love, but Anthony refused, saying he could never forget how Violet was heartbroken after Edmund's death.[4] Violet told Anthony she was sorry about what happened after Edmund's death, and wished she could change that. She knew he still had feelings for Kate, and encouraged him to fight for her.[19]

Daphne Basset[]

Daphne is Violet's fourth child and eldest daughter. She was thrilled when Daphne was named the Incomparable after making her debut.[5] She was happy when Daphne appeared to have gained Simon as a suitor, but was furious when she learned Anthony had promised Daphne to Nigel. When Nigel tried to blackmail Daphne into marriage, Violet came up with the idea to find gossip about him and spread it. The plan worked, and Nigel fled London, saving Daphne from a miserable marriage.[6]

Violet saw the connection between Daphne and Simon and expected him to propose formally. She was disappointed when Daphne chose Prince Friedrich over the Duke, as she wanted her daughter to marry for love.[8] She was overjoyed when Daphne announced that she was engaged to the Duke after all. She happily supported their stand against the queen to obtain a special marriage license, and attempted to talk to her after the wedding about her marital duties, but could not get the words right.[9]

Daphne told her mother how her lack of words made her unaware of intimate relationships and she felt deceived.[11] Violet apologized to Daphne at her ball, and encouraged her to fight for her marriage.[12]

Eloise Bridgerton[]

Eloise is Violet's fifth child and second daughter. Violet tried to push suitors onto Eloise at Aubrey Hall, but Eloise broke down and confessed that she "knew" she was a disappointment to Violet in comparison to Daphne.[15] Violet corrected Eloise's assumption, and said she wanted her to be her unique self.[19]

Friendships[]

Lady Danbury[]

Violet and Lady Danbury are close friends. When Daphne had trouble finding another suitor beside Lord Berbrooke, her mother and Lady Danbury conspired to set up Daphne with Lady Danbury's godson, the newly-returned Simon Basset, Duke of Hastings. They were delighted when their plans seemed to have worked, with Daphne and Simon beginning an apparent courtship.

Their friendship continued, with their goals for the 1814 season meshing once more with Anthony pursuing Edwina Sharma, whom Lady Danbury was sponsoring for the season, as his bride. When Violet found out about the Sheffield inheritance, she felt betrayed that Lady Danbury didn't tell her, and was distant from her friend. They made up during Anthony and Edwina's aborted wedding, where they admitted they knew something was going on between Anthony and Kate.

Notes and Trivia[]

  • She was taught Latin by her governess and wanted to learn advanced mathematics.
  • Though her age is not given, Violet appears to be in her teens at the time of the coronation, and Connie Jenkins-Grieg was 18 at the time of filming. Even supposing she was 13, this would make her at least 36 when Anthony was born.

Memorable Quotes[]

Eloise: I believe I should like to stay.
Violet: I believe you should like to go.[5]

Violet: Should your brother wish to be obeyed as Lord Bridgerton, he must act as Lord Bridgerton.[5]

Violet: Lord Berbrooke may not respect a woman's choice, but he certainly will respect a man's.[6]

Violet: Anthony, this is it. This is my best. I am doing my best. Every day, I get up, I get dressed, I feed myself, I try to breathe in and out. I force myself to stop by the nursery. And I think about how sorry I feel for little baby Hyacinth because she will never know Edmund's laugh. Or the way he smelled, or what it is to be hugged in his arms. I feel even sorrier for myself because, most of the time, all I am thinking is that this little baby did not do me the kindness of killing me so that I could be with my husband. Edmund was the air that I breathed. And now there is no air.[4]

Violet: Responsibility? I wish to know something, Anthony. Tonight, when you leave this study — that you continue to keep at your family home — are you to return to your bachelor lodgings across the square, or will you pay a visit to a certain soprano that you tend to in an apartment that you pay for on the other side of town? Relying on your younger brothers to one day do the job that you cannot? You like to speak of responsibility... My dear son! Of duty? Pray tell, what should you know of it?! I sit with her in that drawing room. Do you know what I see? A young woman who is terrified because she knows what kind of life, what kind of future, awaits her should you continue to get in her way. If your father was still here, Daphne would already have been matched. The man would have made an arrangement with an old friend. The man would have done what was now necessary. So, you must ask yourself, are you merely an older brother, or are you the man of this house?[5]

Violet: I sit with her in that drawing room. Do you know what I see? A young woman who is terrified because she knows what kind of life, wha-what kind of future awaits her should you continue to get in her way.[5]

Violet: I know society has dictated your present role in this family, Anthony, but with Daphne officially out, I assure you, I am more than capable.[6]

Daphne: And who will believe a group of women over a man's word?
Violet: Perhaps no one, but they will if Lady Whistledown does, so we shall do what women do. We shall talk.[6]

Violet: There is a lesson here for you somewhere, Anthony. I only hope that this time you will finally learn it.[14]

Violet: Courtship, the consideration of a proposal, choosing the person you wish to spend the rest of your life with. My darling boy, it should be a time full of joy.[4]

Violet: My darling...If you have doubts, do not simply set them aside. This is the most important choice you will ever make. And it would break my heart to see you spend the rest of your life in regret. I dare say it would break your father's heart too.[16]

Violet: I know I do not always say the right things. And then the things I do say, well...They are not always what you wish to hear. I am only able to offer you what I know.[12]

Doctor Walker: It is his lordship's choice.
Violet: Edmund is his lordship! The choice is Edmund's. It could only be Edmund's because he loved me. He loved me so much. This wouldn't even be a conversation. Because that kind of love...the answer...this choice...is obvious. I should not have to explain this to anyone! Edmund should be here![4]

Eloise: I fear I must disappoint you yet again.
Violet: The only thing that would disappoint me is seeing you starting to care what anyone else thinks.[19]
